98 Montero Sport 200,000 miles

I know that there was a recall having to do with the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer to the drive shaft. What did the recall involve?

I never had a problem with this for the first 175,000 miles. Never took it to the dealer for the recall. Now I have had this bolt back out on me twice in the last 25,000 miles. Had to replace several parts, including the balancer each time this has happened.

What did they do when the car came in for the recall?

I believe the recall was only for the 97 models. The solution was:

"DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT TO THE CORRECT TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. IF THE BOLT IS DAMAGED, IT WILL BE REPLACED"

If you just torque that bolt to spec, it shouldn't be a problem. I know there was one guy on the forum that had a sheared off Woodruff Key. So the balancer really wasn't held on to the crankshaft at all, apart from the crankshaft bolt. It worked itself loose. Very rare problem though. I think it happened when he did a big off-road jump. Doubt you have the same issue.

Make sure you don't have too much tension on the belts.

I've had mine work it's way loose and snap off...not fun. This happened four days after I had the belts and alternator replaced. I made the repair shop fix it on their dime as well as paying for the tow to their shop. Seven months later the same problem happened. This time I had a repair shop who specializes in Mitsubishi trucks repair it...13 months later and the bolt is still holding.
