Put some 255/85R16 Cooper Discoverer STs yesterday. I removed the front mud flaps to give a little more clearance (lost the rears to a log on an icy trail a couple years ago). Looks like should clear without trouble. Tread is an agressive all-terrian. Not a full mudder, but with our slow and ice that is better. Ride is pretty smooth (esp. compared to well worn tires that came off). I did notice a slight increase in road hum compared to the BFG All-Terrians, but not bad at all. Tire is 33.2" tall, so roughly 1.7" taller than 265/75s and 3.2" taller than stock 255/70s. Clearance under the rear pumpkin is an even 10", under lowest point of front skid plate 12". Front bumper, nerf bars and after market receiver hitch all sit right about 18" off the ground. Previous....with 32s (265/75R16) Now...with 33s (255/85R16) Plenty of room (I hope) to clear w/o rubbing Tread design of the Cooper Discoverer ST

very nice! The rear won't rub at all. The front will only rub a little, and then only when turning into a driveway that goes up sharply with the steering wheel at almost full lock. you have to be carrying a bit of speed, i.e. about 10mph.
those are a pretty aggressive A/T tire.
I knew you'd like the 255/85R16
This is the perfect tire for this vehicle!
I still have my front mud flaps. With out yours, you may not rub at all.
I dumped the rear mud flaps on a trip to Colorado and never put them back on. I like the way it looks with out them.

Fun little update. I have found that my MPG actually improved slightly with the change.
I used to put in about 10.5-10.6 gallons every other day if it was just commute without other driving (roughly 85 miles round trip). With the new tires, 10.1-10.2. Too cool, no?

ayup, it effectively lowers your gear ratio so you get better mileage.
Like on a chevy truck/SUV, they come with 3.73 gears and get XX.X mpg. With the tow package and 4.10 gears you get a bit less gas mileage.

that looks like a huge tread depth. impressive for an AT tire. they look really good.

I have not had a chance yet to wheel them.....but they have done well on snow, ice and in the muddy mess we get into around the horses.

Hey, that looks great! I swear after 2.5 years of owning my truck I'm getting ready to do the Emu Lift I just pulled all the flaps of mine a few months ago as well. Ran some silicone and used the left over fastener to secure the flare (which was then not attached at the lower rear w/o the flap) so all is now well. Pulled my fancy running boards too, though they may go back on after a lift to protect the rockers... Has anyone called BFG, asked for the AT product manager, and told them to release the AT in that size? MT just doesn't work for me on this truck (yet... still drive every day for work, too many miles, plus we have snow and ice...) BFG ATs are just the flippin perfect tire for me, I will never forgive lack of perfect size in that model

It does seem odd to me that so few make an AT tire in 255/85R16. i still have not had a chance for agressive wheeling with the coopers, but this winter I loved them on snowy roads. better than the BFGs

Do you have a lift on that? if so which size? Yes, 2" Old Man Emu. Hi guys. Glad to have found this site. I have an 03 I bought new. My 255 65's BFG A/T's are shot. Is the EMU kit discussed for 2wd? And if so whats the cost. His site makes it seem like its around 200 total front and rear. Is that about right? I am used to lifting for 38's on my old CJ7. (EXPENSIVE) Thanks in advance. Paul

2003.
Been a great rig! And I agree completely with the BFG all-terrian TA. Loved the set I had. Great on snow and ice, slick rock, you name it. And I got over 76k miles out of them.
Sad as it is, I have done very little off-roading thus far with the Coopers, but last winter they did ever better then the BFGs.
