Hello!
I had been looking for a 4X4 SUV to use as a DD and for hunting. I found a 2001 Monty Sport XLS with 240k miles that a dealer dropped from 5k to 2k. The body and interior is in great shape but it turns out the transmission slips between gears. It also has a few engine oil leaks, the oil was over serviced by about a quart. I fixed the oil level but have not been able to verify if it fixed the leak issues (it looks like rear camshaft seals. Thanks FAQ.)
The tranny was low on fluid and had a leak that I did not have a chance to identify before I left to TX for work. I was kinda hoping for an easy fix, But since the vehicle has 240k and I was able to find a new OEM transmission on ebay for 650 bucks I ended up buying the transmission for 880 taxes and shipping. www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-AUTOMATIC-TRANSMISSION-OEM-MONTERO-SPORT-3-0-4X4-AUTO-01-02-03-MITSUBISHI-V6-/261447730791?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A2001%7CModel%3AMontero+Sport&hash=item3cdf7fc667&vxp=mtr (this link is to the transmission I bought. If this is considered advertising I will delete it.)
Please let me know any issues I could run into while swapping the transmission or any tips/preventative maintenance I should do while it is out. I plan to replace the crankshaft seal as of right now.
I have replaced a few clutches over the years so the overall task does not worry me. I also ordered the hayes manual but I think it is only for the full size Monty but it should help as a guideline. I just want to cover all bases and not waste time having to pull the tranny for a cheap fix I could do while it is out.
Thanks!
Also the same seller has a 2wd transmission for 600 bucks if anyone needs one.
