Hello,
I just bought this vehicle and it did not have an owners manual (on order). I would like to find out if I have a keyless entry system or not. It did not come with a key fob. I do have a tiny red light on the left side of steering wheel. Does this mean I have a keyless system? If so, where/what is best fob to buy? Also, if I have a keyless I will assume it is not an alarm. If I wanted to add this, what is the best system for this year vehicle?
Thanks Jim

I have keyless entry in my 'o1 MS, I don't have any red LED on the left side of the steering wheel. I don't have an alarm system, it just has that transponder thing built into the key itself.
That's all I can offer i'm sorry.

There are two factory systems for '97. Keyless and Keyless/Alarm. As far as I remember they use the same fob. The fobs are no longer available from Mitsu and there are no more in the US at the wharehouses. I learned that in December when I was trying to replace one on a '98. I bought the last two new ones I could find on ebay. I sugest looking there. You'll still need it programed to your vehicle; they can still do that at the dealership. Somewhere I have the instructions to do this yourself, but they're still packed away from moving. Its easy to tell for the keyless/alarm. There's usually a red LED/pushbutton to the left of the steering wheel next to the cruise control button either in a blank or between the blanks under the vent. The second way to check is there will be a small black box zip-tied to the steering column under the dash. The LED is kind of a giveaway, though. Keyless entry only is a single box that I THINK is located in the driver side kick panel. I have two '97s with keyless/alarm. Both were dealership installs. One when it was new and the second two years or so ago - got the last factory keyless/alarm setup in the US. On the last install a couple years ago, I didn't pay any attention to the install. Dealership tech should be able to tell you if its installed. It is unlikely they'll tell you where it is or give any details because that's a vehicle security feature. They're not going to give out all the info to circumvent stuff like that. BTW, after '98 all this stuff started changing drastically. My '03 setup is not even vaguely the same keyless/alarm system. Hi Edward,
Great info thanks! I have both the little red button/light and small box attached to steering column. It has 2 red lights and has "Pressure shock sensor" on it.
So what do I look for in a key fob to make sure I am buying the correct one?
Thanks again Jim

The column box is the shock sensors - which has a little white nob to adjust the sensitivity. 1997 Montero Sport keyless/alarm fobThis is the Montero Sport fob. I'm not sure if its the same for the '97 Montero. I'd check with the dealership and confirm. Edward

Thanks - I saw those on Ebay. Since I have an alarm shouldn't there be a panic button also?

Thanks - I saw those on Ebay. Since I have an alarm shouldn't there be a panic button also? No worries. Nope. My '03 has three buttons but the old '97-'98 was as you see them in the eBay post. Just two buttons. If I remember correctly - never used the feature - I THINK you hit both buttons at the same time for 'panic'. However, as old as that system is, it may not even have that feature. Old or not, it works pretty well, though. Edward

Which required tearing most of the rear cargo area apart to get to. It may be possible to go to a dealership and have them pull the build info for your vehicle. They don't have that anymore for '97-'99, but they could still get it for my '03. It'll list everything the vehicle came with. You'll need to supply them with your VIN. Edward
