1997 Montero LS sun roof will not open

I just bought this vehicle. When I looked at it the sun roof would not open. Owner at the time stated that it did work and that last person to view vehicle kept opening & closing it.

When I push the button I hear the motor but it barely moves. I am afraid to push it open incase it will not close.

Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this or advice on how to fix?

Sounds like you may have to remove for further inspection. A guess is the cable may have came loose or snap.
Others may chime in with better suggestions.

My '99 MS LTD came with a crank in the tire iron pouch that is intended to be used to manually close the sunroof in case the motor fails. I think there are instructions in the owners manual on how to do this. Maybe it can be used to open the sunroof and to do some diagnostics?
