2000 MS, V6 automatic. Just started hearing a loud clunking noise when moving the gear shift to drive or reverse. Other than that, drives normal. Anybody have had this issue? Something wearing out?

someone please correct me if I am wrong as this is my first vehicle like this but if your hearing a clunk I think that would be a sign of a possible bad U joint.

How big of a repair would it be to replace the U-Joint? Is it quite costly? It seems to make that noise only when the brake is applied while shifting, When my foot is off the brake & I move the gear shift, there is no clunking noise. Brakes are recently new.

so going from park to reverse or drive it kind of clunks and vibrates? not sure if I am correct on my guess but if I am.... you can get a ACdelco or MOOG u joint for about $20 from rockauto. The job isn't that bad either, but id suggest getting a second opinion before taking my diagnosis

Crawl under the vehicle and check out the U-joints you should have 1 on each end of the drive shaft. block the wheels and place in neutral. grab the drive shaft and try and turn it by hand while watching the u-joints there shouldn't be any slack in them the diff. will turn some while you do this your looking for play in the joint itself, if there is replace em. otherwise you will need to check the backlash at the rear pinion gear. you do this the same way but you will need to measure the amount of rotation in the drive shaft before the rear wheels start to turn I think its less than 10mm. if you don't feel like you can do this have it checked out at a shop.

You know after doing plugs and wires on mine a week ago the first shift into Reverse on a cold start actually gives me a jolt, even produces some tire squeal, then it settles down after driving. Can't imagine what might have triggered that.

Can't imagine what might have triggered that. Dan I have 2003 LTD and I noticed that the car does shift a lot when moved into reverse. Sometimes a clunk but nothing as extreme as wheel spin and not every time it is put into reverse. I don't think mine is bad enough to worry about or noticeable by passengers.

Yeah mine may have been doing this before, but I never noticed it because I was always backing down a sloped driveway or driving forward from a parking spot out front, so I rarely put it in reverse. I have a feeling it just needs to relearn how to reverse shift because it sat dormant for several weeks. Never disconnected the battery though.
