I recently bought a 99 Montero Sport from my brother for $600, as my old Accord died and I wasn't ready to take on a car payment just now. He had let it just sit for 2 years because of starter issues. (It is one of the few 99s that takes a different starter.) After buying it, we did research, found the right starter, a new battery, got a set of used tires, and had an oil leak fixed. I started a new job that requires me to transport kids long distances. In the deep South with no air, this pretty much sucks, especially since some of the children are newborns, so we looked into having the A/C fixed. Turns out it was missing the belt. Put one on and the A/C worked perfectly. One week later, the belt broke. My husband was working 7 days a week at the time, so he took it to a friend who is a former mechanic to have the A/C belt, water pump belt, and alternator belts replaced. This is when we realized that the pin securing the crankshaft pulley to the timing belt pulley was broke off. We bought a new harmonic balancer, new crankshaft sprocket kit, and new timing belt. The guy put them on this past weekend. The car will run, but very rough. My husband took another mechanic out to make sure they weren't off by a notch or two. According to all three of them, the timing belt is in sequence and no valves have been bent, but the car skips like crazy and the "Check Engine" light is now on. Any ideas on what the issue could be?
