Ok, so about 4 years ago, I was in Arizona and it was close to 120 degrees out. My wife was feeling sick so I left her in the truck with the a/c running parked in the shade, and ran in the store. When I came out I noticed the temp gauge up 3/4 of the way, but did not go any higher. I did this once or twice that weekend in the extreme heat, and then never again. I noticed that in the high 90's lately, with the A/C on and climbing up the Cajon pass, once or twice it heated up 3/4 again. I immediately turn off the A/C and it drops to a little above 1/2 way, and does not drop to the normal spot till it's off the hill. A couple months ago I did a complete 100K service when I was having some other work done and hoped it would remedy it. My wife had told me it did it again about a week ago. It never overheats, I just don'f feel comfortable with it. I even added Redline Water Wetter, just for the heck of it, and it didn't solve it.
ANY IDEAS?

Could be a number of things. Blocked airflow to radiator. Failing fan/ac fan. Bad coolant. Or just a hot a$$ day. I ran into the same situation coming home from from a funeral in Kansas. I would also check the condenser fan and fuses too. Although sometimes these things just happen. Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards

You know the only time my '01 started to overheat was with a full load of kids going up to China Peak Ski Resort in Calif. Turned out my radiator cap had disintegrated and was letting the coolant push out through the reservoir overflow.

Make sure that the aux electric A/C fan is working. That you don't have a blow fuse or its actually died. Maybe the clutch on the mechanical main fan. Also make sure you don't have missing fan shroud parts. The bottom piece clips in and I've seem more than a few with the entire bottom missing. If all that is ok and you've flushed the coolant system and refilled it with the correct mixture and still have the problem, then its probably air flow. The A/C condenser and radiator will over time get clogged up. Bugs, leaves, dirt, mud, etc. The best way to fix that problem is to take both out, take them to the car wash and pressure wash them both in the reverse direction of air flow. MAKE SURE you tightly seal the ports on the A/C condenser so you don't get water inside!!! You'd be amazed how much crud collects in the fins over time. As for the heating up while sitting thing - mine do that. Always have even when new. If its really hot (+90/95 degrees) and you just sit there with the A/C on without moving, the temp will creep up to about 3/4. Something that may help is running a bottle of Water Wetter or BG's BeCool. I use the BG product in my big Sport. Don't get much air flow while wheeling and wheeling in 100+ temps is pretty harsh. Anyway, it seems to help. This IS NOT a fix if you have a problem - address the problem first. Edward

Ok, so all the fans are good....... Just had the dealership flush the radiator and fill along with all other fluids when I had to do the plugs and wires, coil, injector, and header. I really was hoping that would take this old ghost problem away...... I did add Redline Water Wetter and hoped that would stabilize, no luck. It never overheats, it just makes me feel uncomfortable that it gets that hot. I am glad at least others experienced this even when they were new. When it happens we usually turn off the AC, open the window and turn the heat on high to help the engine bay.
After looking around under the hood, I notice that there rally doesn't seem anyway for air to escape. I have a couple ideas:
1. I will start with the old washer trick on the bolts for the hood hinges. This was an old cheap racer trick to help with venting heat form the engine bay. 2. Maybe add hood vents that let heat out, not a scoop, as it only seems to happen in stop and go up a hill traffic on hot days. 3. Maybe add some vents in the fenders to escape heat? Either like the ones on the older or newer Range Rovers?

The temperature sensor could be bad. Just remember to use the right sealant when installing. Our monteros did have a faulty temperature gauge that would go all squirrelly. It was a fault in the panel on the Guage cluster if I remember correctly. Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards

Mine was having the same problem....fix was to replace a faulty ECT sensor.....http://msport97.proboards.com/thread/9520/condenser-fan-come-on

The cap itself didn't leak but it wasn't a closed system, and as soon as the temp got up it would let the coolant expand out through the reservoir and overflow all over the underside of the engine.

Still no leaks, all fans working, statred to do it again today..... I'm going to try the ECT sensor.... I also noticed it is so hot under he good when I popped it at home, I wonder how much heat soak there is with an open air intake? ?

If yes, then you don't have to replace ECT, it's working fine.

Yeah the condenser fan cones on with the A/C.....

Had this happen one hot weekend in AZ the problem is the AC fan will actually stop working when in park and when over temp happens. I don't know if this is a design or a problem.

Hmmm, what do you guys think about my upper + lower billet grille blocking air? Or open air intake causing heat soak? I still can't justify replacing anything because it just doesn't make sense that it would do it even while driving in heat @ 95F+

Anywho have you got your system pressure tested? maybe sticky thermostat? bad radiator cap, could be ok but when it gets too hot it wont hold the pressure. Maybe you got too many fins bent on your radiator and isn't cooling as efficient...seems simple but will drive you crazy. having a problem like this now but with AC. lol
