I am replacing my muffler on my 01 MS 3.0 and the new ones width at center is 7.5" and the old one is 9" all other dimensions are the same as old one except the width, will this have an adverse effect on my engine and back pressure? Thanks all for you input!

I am replacing my muffler on my 01 MS 3.0 and the new ones width at center is 7.5" and the old one is 9" all other dimensions are the same as old one except the width, will this have an adverse effect on my engine and back pressure? Thanks all for you input! Depends on the muffler. If you're looking to replace the stock 55 gallon drum muffler, I suggest looking at Flowmaster. Summit Racing has good prices. Considerably cheaper than the shops will charge you for one. If you do go Flowmaster, make sure you get the heat shield for them. Depending on the Flowmaster model the tone and amount of 'noise' changes. Series 40Series 50Can't remember which I have on my big '97 Sport anymore. Been four or five years since I had it replaced. (this is my second one in 500K+ miles) I think its the Series 40 Delta Flow. I had the exhaust replaced from the CAT back to the rear with 2.25" pipe (so these are for 2.25"). Stock is 2". If you have the cash and since you're replacing the muffler anyway, I'd recommend having the same done and going to the 2.25". Don't go any larger!!! Do NOT let anyone sell you a 2.5"+ setup. The Sport won't use the extra size and it'll tank your low end torque - which will negatively affect your mileage. I have a '97 LS 3.0L and '03 Limited 3.5L both with stock exhaust. The Series 40 is a little louder than the stock muffler but not by much. Nothing like my '68 'Bird. That sounds like I'm dumping a 400 CID engine into an empty dumpster. Works great but not a whole lot quieter than open exhaust. LOL! Otherwise, I use Flowmaster especially for off road vehicles. They're super durable. A normal (including stock) muffler won't last past the first hit on a rock. Again, if you do go Flowmaster, don't forget the heat shield. And, make sure you have a good shop do the exhaust if you're going to the 2.25" setup. Have the straighten out the kinks a bit and drop the exhaust tip just about 2" below the rear. Edward
