The biggest reason i have doubt that it survived is the numerous failed attempts to crank after the fact. Ive tried probably 30 times to start it before i knew the t-belt was broken. had i just tore into it when it cut off, it would have a higher probability to survive since it didnt make any god-aweful noises.
The motor has 240K miles on it, it needs VSS for sure; If i were to try and salvage it, it would make more sense to do a total rebuild not just heads. A re-manned motor or one of ebay would be economical vs a rebuild but i dont have the time, space or tools to do a motor swap. Ive had the monte for 10yrs now, put 120k mi. on it myself....not bad on a $5k investment. I feel like its just not worth pouring more $$$ into. Next it will be the tranny or the ECM or something else....its just getting to that age/milage.

Yep its up to you. If it was 4wd I'd try to rebuild it. Otherwise I'd go a different route. I thought it had less miles on it for some reason???

jkdv8 - +1 bdmontero - +1 jay4x4 - +1, but I'd have the heads pulled first. While I agree, sometimes you do get lucky. If you can do the work yourself, having the heads done is a LOT less than a new engine install and engine. Edward

yea, the lack of 4x4 is a big factor as well.
What in your opinion(s) is the best way to get rid of it? craigslist, scrap yard..?
Wheels and tires are coming off; they are too new to part with and honestly prob worth more than the mante as she sits. Aftermarket speakers/head unit coming out. maybe the ECM.

... The motor has 240K miles on it, it needs VSS for sure; If i were to try and salvage it, it would make more sense to do a total rebuild not just heads. New, low mileage engine. "that age" is about 500K if you beat the crap out of it. The Montero guys have vehicles that are exceeding 750K - without engine and tranny swaps. I didn't start loosing sensors until I passed 500K a couple years ago and replacing everything is STILL a lot cheaper than replacing and a vehicle. Keep in mind that even the '00-'05s are not designed as throwaways. Even one with that kind of miliage still has a lot of life left in it unless it was totally trashed. Anyway, something to think on .... Edward

That sucks man. Hopefully it will work out. I would inspect it though just to see the damage. If you can get away with just the heads it would be worth it I think.

**UPDATE** Decided to part ways with the monte; between engine work, paint, suspension work that needed to be done, i figured it just wasn't worth putting the money into, especially since it wasnt 4x4. I opted for a silverado z71 w/ the 5.3l V8 as a replacement. Before parting ways, i did scavenge the wheels/tires (which will work on the new truck...SCORE!!), PCM, head unit and speakers, as well as all 19 gal. of gas i had put in the day before she puked out.
So if anyone is interested, i have some various sensors, as well as 2 PCMs ('98 3.oL, '99 3.0L), a stock replacement K&N
