First off, I would like to apologize for posting the same thing that so many others have. I went through several of the threads seeing the exact same answers and none of them were getting down to what I really needed to know.
I want to replace all of the speakers in my 2001 Montero Sport. It has the upgraded Infinity system and I have several questions regarding this upgrade.
First an foremost, what are the size specifications for the speakers in the doors? I know that they are 6.5 inch, 6.75 inch compatible. Does anyone know the depth of the speakers, or how far into the door they can be?
I really wanted to pick up two pairs of Pioneer TS-A1685R, but Crutchfield.com claims that this speaker will NOT fit the Montero Sport - I am wondering why this is, or if its wrong.
Secondary Questions, no need to get overwhelmed, the top part of this post is what I created this thread for. I simply figured that I might as well list everything since someone might be able to help me on more than one of the questions.
- How many speakers are there total, and where are they located? - Do I need to, or how do I, either remove or bypass the Inifinity amp? - Should I have two amps, one for the midrange speakres and one for the subwoofer? - Should I put two tweeters in the front doors, in the smaller spots? - What is the RMS rating and how do I use it? - What amplifiers are compatible with the speaker I have chosen? - How do I wire up the two subwoofers that will be placed in the trunk? - How loud can I go before I cause damage?

I put the infinity reference 6020cs components in mine and there was plenty of room. Look up and see what the mounting depth was on them as I don't remember. Then for the dash I did the 4022i's iirc.
-8; 4 6 1/2 in the doors, two 4" in he dash, two 1" tweets on the front doors.
-either way works well. You need the integrating harness if using factory amp.
-again depends. Not necessary.
-I just replaced the existing.
-rms is continuous power output/input. One figure in determining amp and speaker combo.
-have to look at the specs of the speakers. Have to match the ohm rating and get the rms of the two as close to or under the speakers rating.
-depends on many factors.
-ears or car?

Now to find those two 4 inch speakers. -either way works well. You need the integrating harness if using factory amp.
I will not be using the factory amp, Planning on buying 2 after market amps and removing the factory one -again depends. Not necessary.
Ok, I'll go with my original plan then! -I just replaced the existing.
I worded this question poorly, I was wondering if I should even put new speakers in the 1 inch spots or just leave them empty - same with the dash speakers. -rms is continuous power output/input. One figure in determining amp and speaker combo.
Ok, after talking with someone else I was able to figure out the basics. -have to look at the specs of the speakers. Have to match the ohm rating and get the rms of the two as close to or under the speakers rating.
Definitely have that covered - thanks. -depends on many factors.
That is why I will be having someone else do it! -ears or car?
Car, or more - speakers. I want to have a setup that allows pretty loud music - I don't have any way of measuring this though, no way of saying how many decibels :/ all I can say is that I want to turn it up to the point where you can not understand a person talking at normal volume - and keep it there for a period of time.

If you're going with an aftermarket amp just get 2 sets of components front and rear and don't worry about the dash speakers. They do however help with the mids. Just remove the old tweeters then pop the new in. You'll have to drill holes for the tweets if doing rear components. Could just throw 2-3 ways in the rear door however the seats block the sound. As far as decibels go you can kinda a get a good idea with a smartphone. Most have a decibel app. Not a professional tool but kinda gets you in the ballpark.

Crutchfield is your friend... Going on 30 years now. I used to be a VP of the L.A. Audio Society so I can honestly say I know a little about audio.
