My wife and I just purchased a 2008 Mazda CX-9 Touring ED. with 108k a few days ago because Monty is getting too old and is having problems left and right. I need to pull the heads on the Montero because of the ticking/knocking and burning oil. Monty will now be a work truck for my Mobile Dj business and whatever else that I need to haul so I don't have to use my Mazda. The Mazda will now be the family truckster and I hope it'll be good to us just like our Monty was. We are just happy and very thankful that we didn't have to get rid of our Monty. I will post some pics of the CX-9 tomorrow.

Ya, I am right with you on mileage on my sport and get funny sounds here and there and burning oil but I haven't had any problems thank god,so I understand the need for another vehicle. Congrats!

Yeah, congrats on the new ride. Will be a sad day when I have to retire mine. Suppose to be sending the Montero back over for the 2016 model year. Hopefully it won't be a hybridized grocery getter. I'll believe it when I see it however.

I'll believe it when I see it however. thought I am about to give up mine because of a lingering SES light due to P0138 code w/c I cannot find time to tinker on especially on these cold days....due for registration renewal this december......took a chance at the emission center in ATL, since SES wasn't showing up last time I got it cleared.....talked to my Monty (silently) to cooperate or else....LOL.....passed with flying colors even I knew I hadn't ran him enough about 200 miles.....lo & behold, after the test, dropped by B.A to encash some check, SES popped up!!!.....was laughing while telling it to my wife.....My Monty still want to stay with me...  |

Yea ok I'm not even sure what code that is. Would have to look it up. You could always move out in the sticks. Just the inner city counties require emissions.

The 138 you're getting. I was getting the 128. <snip> - Faulty Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 - Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 harness is open or shorted - Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 circuit poor electrical connection - Intake air leaks - Exhaust gas leaks - Inappropriate fuel pressure - Faulty fuel injectors <snip> I went though this exact list chasing the 128 and the problem you're having sounds exactly like the flaky random inexplicable stupidity it took my years to track down.  The first three and the last two are the most important. There is (somewhere) a TSB for the second two. I don't remember what year(s). Apparently there was a possibility of a wire wearing through and shorting or something. Since this is relatively easy check with an ohm meter, I'd confirm - both visually and with an ohm meter - these two first. (if you need some pointers, hollar) O2 sensors don't last forever and way before they just die, they start acting flaky. And, as much as I hate to say this, the cheap aftermarket ones are not reliable, so I'd recommend the factory ones. The good part is that they last a LOT longer than the aftermarket ones do. I know the FSMs don't document this and the Mitsu techs will swear this is impossible but the the rear O2 sensor(s) can also cause a code or contribute to triggering a code. The sucky part is nothing points to the rear O2 sensors because they're not referenced. The last two are unlikely. "Inappropriate fuel pressure" - clogged fuel filter, worn out/failed regulator and failing fuel pump in that order. If you change the filter regularly, unless you're getting your fuel out of a 55 gallon drum, you can rule that out. The last two are mileage dependent. The very first thing to check is to make sure that the vacuum hose on the regulator isn't disconnected, cracked, or plugged. Then test fuel pressure. Unfortunately you have to have the tool to do that so unless you have a LOT of miles or some other reason to suspect a fuel pump ... I'd leave that for the very last. You can do this yourself, but the tools will cost more than a trip to the dealership. Its unlikely you have an injector issue. Injectors have their own set of codes and you'll see one or more of those in combination with the 138. Probably something else, too. If it got to this point in troubleshooting, though, I'd leave it for the last with the fuel pressure and have the techs put a MUT on it 'cause they'll be able to tell if something isn't right with one or more injectors while they're doing a pressure test. Four and five are the most likely. Cracked, broken and/or disconnected vacuum line(s), manifold leak, cracked/rusted out/punctured exhaust. What people overlook is that the EGR and EVAP can let "air" into the system - and that's what screwed me up for ever. If either or both of these aren't working correctly, they'll create all kinds of flaky behavior. EGR can create the exact same effect as a leak in the exhaust pre-O2 sensor and EVAP can create a giant vacuum leak. I'd look into these systems, 'cause I'd bet money that's where your problem is. If the EGR valve itself is working correctly, I'd bet you have one or more solenoids flaking out. Or maybe just dead. In my experience, it's a lot more likely you have a solenoid problem rather than the EGR valve itself. Edward |

It MAY be O2 related, but as old as our vehicles are, if you're having a weird intermittent issue ... I just have this nagging suspicion .... BTW, the pair of solenoids for EGR and EVAP on the back of the intake manifold are the same for the Montero, Montero Sport and probably every other Mitsu of that era. I didn't check for the post '00, but I did check for the '90s and the were exactly the same as the Montero, Eclipse, Gallant, etc. So, you can probably find a pair from the salvage yard for a couple bucks. I don't know a reliable way to test these - either the EVAP solenoids or EGR solenoid. I can't even tell you taking it to the dealership and having them run the MUT diagnostics will work. We tested mine 20+ times over 4-5 years and they never showed up bad. Even this summer when we tested them, half the time they came up fine and half the time they didn't. Dang things would test perfectly fine and two minutes later would show up bad - and then two minutes later they'd be fine again. If you can get a pair from the salvage yard in good shape and with low mileage, I'd grab them and just slap 'em on. If there was a problem I think you'll know in pretty short order. Make sure they're not oil soaked, or corroded, though, and get them off the lowest mileage vehicle you can find. I tried Bosch and Denso. The Denso ones were great 7-8 years ago. They're crap now. The last set I bought were causing codes as soon as I installed them and drove down from my place to the highway. I had better luck with the Bosch, but they were hard to find and expensive. The ones I was using were almost as much as new Mitsu OE sensors. I talked to the techs about this quite a bit. They just cringed when I told them I was using Denso. They did say that Bosch was a better choice if they worked. Some people I've talked to had problems with Bosch popping random code(s) for no apparent reason. The techs said they'd run across the same thing. Car ran fine, but would randomly trigger CEL and a code. YMMV. Edward |

Maybe you can get a CX-7 down the road and enjoy the tuning of the little K04 turbo! Sorry to hear the Monty is experiencing so many little issues. I think we are due to upgrade the Monty in a few years. I don't want to get rid of it so I'm hoping to get stationed in TX or somewhere I can have a garage or a large yard to enjoy more than 2 vehicles.  |
