Hello all,
First off thank you all for the advice. And many thanks to Edward for his professionalism/advice.
Here is my recent troubles. Winter has been cold lately in the mornings in California. Ok, OKAY, not as cold as some of you, but lows here in Northern California are around 27 degrees. I let my rig warm up for at least five minutes and start my commute (30 mins or so). The problem seems to be with the transmission COLD. For example: this morning I let her warm up for five minutes and backed up in reverse. As I shifted into drive it lagged for a brief moment and then it seemed to shirt hard. I drove out of the parking lot and first gear seemed to shift hard. BUT, once down the road and all warmed up she shifted into gears just fine. I came back home and checked my tranny fluid. Put it into neutral with the parking break on and checked the fluid; I couldn't tell if it was low but put some on my finger and the color was light brown. The dipstick was hard to read but said cold and hot and the fluid was closer to the cold position.
Today, I purchased a transmission funnel and ATF Castrol TRANSMAX, the directions says its equivalent to Diamond SPII & SP-III. I am thinking about putting 1/4 down the dipstick. I am at a loss now if it just needs some tranny fluid or there could be something else. I am going to wait until I read a response.
By the way; no SES light 235K on the rig & no other issues that I know of.
2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 3.0 liter V6 Automatic transmission
Please help!
Thank you, Chris

...First off thank you all for the advice. And many thanks to Edward for his professionalism/advice. No worries. Thanks! Unfortunately I have nothing for you on this one. The A/T in my '03 perpetually acts 'weird' - pretty much what you described and the techs keep telling me its 'normal' for this specific transmission. BTW, it was -17 when I got home the other night. 'Cold' is always relative. LOL! Edward

Started it back up tonight coming home from work, let it warm up and shifting just fine. Thanks for the reassurance. YIKES! -17 now that is COLD. When it hits 50 for us in California we all get our jackets out. HA!

Well this morning I let the rig warm up for about five minutes. As I was backing out of my driveway I felt lack of power and the RPM's seemed to go way up. I pressed on the brake and put it back into drive, as I put it back into drive it shifted kind of hard/funny and parked it for another five minutes to let it fully warm up. After it was warm I backedup and drove off to work. No issues once I got to work and no problem on the way home tonight. Tonight I added about 1/3 Quart of trans fluid while the engine was running, went through all the gears smoothly. I guess I will find out tomorrow morning if that helped. Wish me luck!
Thanks, Chris

Sounds like you need to get an accurate reading of the fluid, and if it is brown I would consider doing a filter/fluid change. We have been experiencing some single digit weather here with wind chill going into the negative teens and my Sport doesn't like it but after warming up a bit everything is well.

Agreed, this morning wasn't as cold as it has been and let her warm up for ten minutes. Went through all the gears no problem...Fingers crossed...LOL

can't vouch for any other ATF for our Monty except the Diamond SPIII....If I were you, I'd spend some money to do a drain & fill and see if the problem still persists.

My previous car was a good ol' reliable 5-speed 4 cylinder, I rarely warmed it up before I drove unless it was really really cold outside. It was always ready to go, hot or cold, and nothing seemed to phase the engine or tranny on that car. Even drove it through almost 3 feet of water, and it lived!
Automatics are a little different. Lol. Not in a bad way. But I definitely warm up my Montero before every drive. Mine doesn't hesitate when shifting into drive or anything like that when it's cold, but it definitely is very hesitant and harsh shifting from 1st to 2nd gear when it's cold. I drove it cold only one time, and I was wondering if it was going to shift at all because it was hesitating so long. It wouldn't shift until about 3000 rpm no matter how much or little gas I gave it. I don't think it's a very big deal as most automatics I've driven do shift a little higher when they're cold, but I just can't see it being very good on the automatic transmissions to drive them cold
But needless to say, that was the last time I drove it cold. I always warm it up for 5 or 10 minutes now before I drive and it shifts perfect when it's warmed up so I'll keep warming it up.

Here's my morning/initial start up practice for all our cars/vehicles.....I don't start rolling until the RPM drops down to 1K......
