Got a little alarmed tonight......the warning light never came back but since spring has just kicked in, so I began to use AC.....noticed that while I'm stopped on a light with all the headlights & AC on and my foot on the brake....I'd see the voltage on that little VOM dropped all the way to 12V.....the truck will shake a bit and felt like engine is almost gonna stall......had to turn off lights and voltage will slowly regain back to 13.8 vdc.....do you think it's my alternator or battery?

Get a free test done at Autozone. My old Honda had this same problem when under extreme load, never gave me any problems until the alternator finally died at 200k.

That's a cool little gadget. Thanks for sharing that. I think I'm going to order one since it's not very expensive & it can give you peace of mind, considering all the alternators I & my fellow MS drivers have gone thru.

Sounds alternator-ish to me. yup, my gut-feel and even my observations leads much to the alt.....only thing I haven't checked is the belt tension....

Ya I just replaced my Chinese alternator which lasted only 3 years, and it was doing the same kinds of things. The new one is a Mitsu reman and cured all my electrical problems.. pulsating lights, flickering clock, everything.

Tension was all good.....I'm now leaning more into an IAC issue.....since I only experience this when on full load and while my foot is on the brake pedal and also have the dreaded P0401 code....I'll try a can of BG 44k first then pro'ly clean it.

the can of BG 44K and the change to premium gasoline has significant positive responses on my monty....wasn't experiencing the same hesitations anymore and P401 CEL hasn't reappeared yet....still crossing my fingers...

Coincidentally, roughly 2 years from this post, while traversing I-85 tonight on my way home, saw them flashed again...........I am on a newer Interstate battery but still same alternator.....Ultragauge shows stable voltage at 14VDC though, got home without any issue.

But it does end up being the alternator right ES 97sport? You've said you've been thru several alternators, as well as I have. I don't care if you can go 200 miles or 10 miles, once you see that battery/brake light flash on the dash, that is the first sign or sure thing your alternator is going to die. I say that only because of the bad history that these vehicles have with alternators. Some alternators I've had showed no signs for quite awhile once I saw the brake/battery warning light flicker on. Some signs came right away. But once you notice your wipers, windows moving slower than normal, take it to the garage right away & have a charging system check on it. Again, most likely it will show the alternator is weak. Sounds just like my alternator that went out and stranded me when I first bought my sport. Bakersfield Mitsu replaced it for me with an aftermarket unit, which went out in less than a year. I installed a much better unit and it's been running well ever since.
