How long should it drive to be sure its hot enough? I found when drive home from his shop (5 miles) it did not leak. Now when I went 10-15 miles thats when it puked all the fluid in the above pic. So is the 10-15 miles a sweet spot for measureing the fluid level?

A 5 mile trip probably won't get it hot enough but your 10-15 mile drive probably will.

Came across this info while I was searching for answers to my issues... Thread: msport97.proboards.com/thread/7841/trans-oil-thoughts?page=2Just an FYI on the issue regarding the transmission overheat for the 1999 Montero Sport brought up by OnSafari: I experienced this event mostly during warm weather but I have theories based on observations. - The tranny breather hose is located close to the exhaust manifold. If you ever experienced overheating, check the ATF fluid level if overfilled. Heat generated from the manifold cooks the breather then in turn builds heat pressure to the overfilled fluid. Proper fluid level is critical. (I also think that extending the tranny breather hose away from the manifold will aid). Mitsubishi already made a recall on this but the breather is still at close proximity to the manifold. Does this happen on the 01 and could it have killed the breather tube on my tranny.... thus causing this puke issue?

The 00 and up models run a different trans. Think the breather/vent hose runs a different route.

Spoke to the mechanic today. His trans guy said to drive it with a scan tool to verify it's not overheating or doing anything else weird. Trans guy says he is probably going to need to add an external trans cooler. No mention of a vent or overfill. Just pushing the overheat issue. I reiterated the potential blocked vent issue due to it going in all that mud. Daughter's boyfriend took it for a mud bath... never conected the 2 till now That the vent was what folks mentioned being at fault in some overheat conditions. He swears he will check it. Not sure why he did not check it already.

OK called shop today and got word back that he checked the vent line and indeed one of them was clogged up badly! I'm assuming the multiple vent lines checked would be the transmission and transfer case case lines. In researching, I read they both lay side by side on the top of the transmission. msport97.proboards.com/thread/10570/transfer-case-slow-leakAnyway... All the info was being given to me by the girl at the front desk, so she would have no clue which was clogged. So the plan is for him to now test it tomorrow to be sure that was the culprit! Fingers crossed!

Ok so the report today. Called the shop. The sport has been running and the mechanic has been checking in on it to see if the leak would return. So far so good. No leak and it takes fluid again. He is going to take it for a long drive tonight after hours to see if it maintains...

OK I called the shop. Mechanic said the long drive produced no leaks! So it was the crud in the vent tube! I hate I had to do a transmission service to find this out... LOL! But all in all it was a necessary step in the grand mystery. We had already planned on doing a service on it anyway after the mud bath. So add to the preventative mod list... extend all my breather tubes up to safer ground!

Glad it is sorted out but interesting reason behind it all. You can extend the trans, transfer case and front pumpkin into the engine bay. The rear pumpkin, I have seen FJ guys route it near the fuel filler neck.

Yes crazy it took so long to present itself. Probably was partially plugged by the mud bath and finished off when it sat by mud dobbers, spiders & bees.
Good news.... since I helped the mechanic with all my research her and online... And I presented the solution his transmission guy neglected to mention... There was no charge for him locating and cleaning the vent out. Not many honest ones out there like him anymore. That is the only reason I trust him and let him do so much on my vehicles.

That's great that you have an honest mechanic. Since I got my license, I have never had a mechanic do any work for me. I've done everything from transmission swaps, suspension lifts, motor work, you name it...all either in my parents garage or my driveway haha. Back in college I did brake jobs right in the parking lot of my apartment.

Awesome! 90% of the time I do the work on my cars... it was just the timing of it all... plus there are some components I don't trust myself with just yet. Transmissions are one of them. I never grew up around anyone who worked on cars and none of my friends worked in cars.... so what I have learned it's been an uphill battle. Plus try getting anyone to take a girl who wants to work on a car seriously. I get either talked over or talked to like I'm an idiot. About 10 years ago I had a best friend that I worked on my daily driver/show car. That's where I learned what I do know. But it was never any big jobs and it was never imports. I was the assistant and we only worked on Firebirds and Camaros. Most of it was late 80 early 90 as well. No obdII. And no I can't call him... he and my spouse don't really see eye to eye. I'm sure I can do a lot more than I think, it's just getting the confidence up. I'm always worried about the worst case senario and how would I get out of it... lol! I don't have anyone to come rescue me from my messes. And to report on the condition! The rig got a good amount of driving and everything is bone dry on the ground. Yeehaw

Older cars are easier to work on. And if you're just careful at doing things you won't have a worst case scenario and you'll boost up that confidence.
