Edward... I plan to work on this soon... if I had to estimate... I have about an inch of play before the trucks steering reacts when driving.

Edward... I plan to work on this soon... if I had to estimate... I have about an inch of play before the trucks steering reacts when driving. That's not what you're measuring. This is the measurement of play in the steering box itself - AND ONLY the steering box, not the steering in general. I can do this by eye, but ideally the way to do this is to center the steering and put a dial indicator on the pitman arm to make sure there is no movement through the box to the arm. You ONLY want to measure play in the steering gear of the box itself. If the arm moves, you're using too much force on the steering wheel. That's why I said use a fingertip to turn the steering wheel. Edward

Also take into consideration whether or not your upper control arm bushings are bad or not. I just replaced my upper arms this weekend and that took some play out of the steering wheel as well.

Yes, what you'll get is stuff shifting around when force is applied to it so until the play is taken up, the steering wheel keeps turning and nothing happens. God, I hate control arm bushings. There is something to be said for a solid axle in the front. I have four ball joints, two tie-rod ends on the tie-rod, and two tie-rod ends on my drag link from the steering arm to the pitman arm. I have exactly eight parts to check in the steering and all of them can be checked with a 2' pry bar, the factory bottle jack and an extra set of hands while sitting in a random parking lot. The steering works as well if not better and lasts a LOT longer than the factory configuration. Sigh. Edward
