Gentlemen, I know this has been a hot topic, but thought I would start a fresh thread.
I've got the notorious pulsating light issue on my '01 Ltd that speeds up and slows down with RPM, and includes head lights and interior lights. Appears to worsen when fogs are on. My clock will litterally flicker when those are on, to where you can't help but notice.
Also, I've been hearing a pulsating sound from the engine that it increasing and coincides with the pulsating lights, and which I suspect may be coming from the alternator (which was replaced back in 2011) but I'm not certain.
Does that sounds like an alternator going bad again? I know these alternators are exposed to oil drips but I have not seen any indications of contamination.
TIA

Possibly the alt. How many miles? Alternator whine, if that is what you're experiencing, is usually from a bad ground. Hook a voltmeter to it and monitor its performance. Rub your hand or a paper towel around the bottom of it to check for oil. If all is well and it's not an oem alt it could be failing again.

170K miles, no oil that I've ever seen.. very clean. Installed by Bakersfield Mitsu, but don't know if it's OEM.

The '03 alternator died Monday morning on the way to work. It was doing the same thing. Dealership replaced it and all that went away. There was no contamination on mine. Some times electronics just die. I think mine was caused by a battery, but its the rectifier that causes the pulsing problem. Oh, and i was getting a pulsing hum on the radio, too. Gone now. Edward

Thanks Ed. I leaned into the engine bay a couple of days ago and it definitely sounds like the alternator. Hey better that than the water pump.

All right, got my new alternator made by Mitsu. Anything difficult about the installation on a 2001 Sport Ltd. I should know about? Thanks!

Would also recommend doing your belts while you're at it (if they are due)....

Thanks Ed, Colt. Belts were are pretty new, but while checking things I noticed the power steering tensioner pulley had a little play. Shouldn't that be without?

Disregard, pulley is good. New Mitsu alternator cleared up all issues. Fairly easy install through right front wheel well. Old alternator installed by Bakersfield Mitsu was Chinese, and they put all my old drive belts back on rather than replacing them. Thanks for yet another issue, Bakersfield Mitsu. Hope they replaced my timing belt that I paid them to do.

Sucks even more when its a dealership that SHOULD KNOW BETTER is a bunch of screw-ups. I thank God I've got good guys here! Edward
