AWD Shifting Issue 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
Hi everyone!
I am having a issue with my 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. (4.0 Litter)
The vehicle has the following gear options: 4L, 4H, AWD. However, when you try shift it into AWD, it just makes a grinding sound like it is trying to engage but can't. I have to drive it in 4H.
What could this be?
Thanks!

I expect you already know this. When you try to shift into AWD from 4HI, are you in Neutral? Does it do this shifting from 4HI to 4LO or 4LO to 4HI? Edward

4.0L? As far as I know the truck is always in AWD. Maybe at some point you were on 4H or 4lL and it did not desengage properly but you will feel it.

Typo. That is incorrect. AWD and 4WD are NOT the same thing. When the vehicle is shifted from AWD to 4WD (either 4H or 4L) the vehicle is NO LONGER in AWD mode. AWD uses a viscus coupling in the transfer case to route distribute power from the engine to the front and rear axles. The viscus coupling allows the front and rear axles to turn somewhat independently of each other. 4WD does NOT use the viscus coupling. The front and rear axles are mechanically locked together by the transfer case so that both axles turn at the exact same rate. The behavior of AWD is like an open or limited slip differential. The behavior of 4WD is like a locking differential (an ARB or Toyota electric - NOT a Ford or Spidertrax). There is no such thing as 'AWD 4H', 'AWD 4L' or 'AWD 4WD' on Sports. They're either in AWD or 4WD - not both. Edward

Agree with you Edward . But if he is saying he is switching back to AWD that means he is currently either on 4H or 4low... Right? Otherwise he couldn't switch back to it. I am sure with your vast knowledge on this truck can clarify my confusion? RD

I am sure with your vast knowledge on this truck can clarify my confusion? RD You are correct. He's trying to shift from 4WD to AWD. I'm wondering if the transmission is in Neutral when he's trying to do this or if its in gear. I don't remember if the AWD models have Shift-On-The-Fly. I don't think so. If I remember correctly, my sticker says to shift from AWD to 4WD and back, the transmission must be in Neutral. Pretty sure that's how the Jeep dealership duffus' broke the pivot ball in my t-case shifter before I got my '03. Won't shift unless the A/T is in Neutral and forcing it is always a bad idea. Edward

Hey Ed, We are shift on the fly from AWD to 4H. It only requires to be on N when going from 4H to 4L and vice versa.

I'm having the exact same issue with my 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 3.5L.
It goes from 4-Low (all the way forward) To 4-Hi (middle) To AWD (all the way back)
Yes, I put it in neutral before shifting and I let it sit for like 10 seconds to give it some time to engage.
I've also tried doing it while in park.
Anyway, while shifting from 4-Hi to AWD, then beginning to drive, it makes a grinding sound while going, as if it's not completely engaging/disengaging. So I have to shift it back into 4-Hi to make it sound normal.
On a side note - I'm not quite sure while in 4-lo or 4-hi it's actually engaged because while driving in a tight Circle it doesn't "Buck" like four wheel drive normally does.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The fulcrum probably disintegrated and clogging things up. Quite common. There are a couple recent posts about it.
