Well, the time has come and I figured it was going to happen sooner or later. Few weeks ago I had a battery go completely dead on me and I just figured since it wouldn't hold charge that it was the battery. Replaced it and the car ran well for good 2 months. I have the flickering lights problem and today...after many months of flicker lights I had the car lose all power over a course of 10 miles. It seemed to only charge for a period of time and then stop. Gauges went funky, window wipers slow, and turn signal made tach go to 0 each time it hit. Of course, I pull over and think I can make it home after some checking it over. Long story short I stall and get towed to my house. Question...which alternator are you guys putting into the 3.5L? I am in Hawaii so I don't have a lot of options. O'Reilly has the following: www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/ULT1/13692/01468.oap?year=2003&make=Mitsubishi&model=Montero%2BSport&vi=1417272&ck=Search_01468_1417272_-1&pt=01468&ppt=C0330I pulled the old alternator out and of course it has the oil on it ( I knew before pulling it would). Thoughts on the replacements you guys are using would be great. Jeff

... Question...which alternator are you guys putting into the 3.5L? I am in Hawaii so I don't have a lot of options. O'Reilly has the following: .... 3.0L and 3.5L are the same alternators - there's no difference so no point in getting one over the other. I've used the AutoZone off and on. Seemed to work okish but its been a few years now. They're all being 'remanufactured' out of the country (usually China), so ... don't know if makes any difference where you get one. I started using Quality Power 175A high output alternators on my big Sport. So far I've been real happy with them. Otherwise, I only use Mitsu OEM alternators. I have better things to do than spend my time replacing alternators and replacing AGM batteries is expensive. Edward

So I ended up getting the O'Reilly Auto "Ultima" alternator. I was pleasantly surprised that it was retrofitted with a oil shield on the top side of the alternator. They also included a bulletin stating that the Montero Sport has the leaky cam seal and you should fix that instead of changing out alternators multiple times over the years.
I think it will be good enough to get me through.

That's pretty cool that they offer a shield. Can you post a pic of it?

Yup, I know what you mean. Now it's a matter of how long it will last.

I bought some hi temp 3" aluminum "tape" and stuck a square over the top of my new alt. without sealing the ventilation openings. Hope that keeps any future oil leaks out if they ever show up.

Ya that is hard to see. Is it a metal shield that bolts into place?

My cam seal has been leaking onto the alternator for god knows how long and its still working fine, but now that I've said that it will probably fail haha. I've been putting off pulling the timing belt and replacing the seals.
