I recently pulled my console completely out of the truck to clean a massive coffee (w/ cream) spill, and discovered I wasn't the first one in there. Some idiot (not me this time) apparently needed to get inside the lower rubber boot of the transfer case lever and decided it was easier to just cut the thing with a knife.
Question is: will a new rubber boot just slide over the lever when the handle is off? There's a wide metal sleeve below the upper leather boot that looks rather menacing.
Thanks!
Dan

Dan The boot that attaches to the cab tunnel will slide over the shifter after you take the rubber handle off. I warm the boot up and use dish soap to lubricate it. Be careful because if you warm it up too much the boot will split when you stretch it. The little one that keeps the crud out of the transfer case itself will not slide over the 'bell' of the shifter lever. You need to take the shifter out (remove it from the t-case). Turn if up side down and inside the bell of the lever there's a snap ring. Remove the snap ring and then remove the upper lever piece from the rest of the assembly. I haven't done the second one myself. Never could get the upper part of the shifter lever to come off. This is the procedure dictated to me by the techs that have replaced my last 2-3 boots. Its supposed to be a relatively simple procedure. I know the replacement boot is pretty cheap - just a few $$s. Edward

Thanks Ed. Yeah it's that little rubber boot I want to replace.. sells for about $24 from OEMmits. Hopefully the lever comes out of the T-case easily!

Lever will come out of the t-case with no problem. Its getting the lever separated into two pieces I had issues with. $24? That seems awful high for the little boot. That sounds like the price for the tunnel boot. Edward

Glad to hear the lever will come out that easily.. hopefully that snap ring will too.
Yep $24 + shipping for that little rubber ducky, but from OEM Mitsu.

Must be the special gold infused rubber. No, its just the boot as far as I know. Big snap ring, though - about 1" in diameter. Wasn't hard to remove. Edward

I have not been able to locate a new one anywhere so far. Are you all talking to the dealership or looking after-market? The dealership just did my '99 t-case shifter two months ago and the big Sport last spring and they had no issues getting a replacement shift lever boots. I have an email off to parts to get me the P/Ns for the M/T shifter and t-case shifter boots as well as the A/T t-case shifter boot if they're different. I'll post 'em up as soon as I get them. Edward

Yeah I have looked online for anything to replace my T-case lower boot that some nimrod cut with a knife and "stitched" back up with a twisty wire. I even posted a request on a Japanese parts site. Would love to find a replacement Ed, thanks.

I'm pretty sure the M/T and A/T t-case shift lever boots are the same, but I'm not 100% positive. Still waiting to hear back. I'll give them a call here in a bit. Edward

'97 M/T - Shifter: MR7693622 T-case: MR534625 '99 A/T - T-Case: MR763471 I have them checking to see what the P/N is for the '97 A/T t-case shiter boot is. I'm wondering now if that's the same for all Gen 1 A/Ts or if it changed when the transmission changed. Edward
