I'm going to do this when the replacement switch arrives. I'm told it can be done without dropping the tranny but that it's pretty tight quarters.. even tighter with a front propeller shaft in the way. I think I'll be dropping that out of the way first. Attachments:

I was going take mine out and clean it but I couldn't trace where the connector goes.

Yeah it's impossible to see, but evidently you can follow the harness wiring up by feel and then pull the connector loose. Fortunately the wiring isn't very long so that makes it easier. Very tight quarters, and if you have 4WD you almost have to remove the front drive shaft to get your arm in there, which sounds pretty simple. I got all this from a Mitsu tech on JustAnswer.com by the way.

I was going take mine out and clean it but I couldn't trace where the connector goes. I just watched a video of a guy cleaning one of these switches on You Tube. Will take my old one apart when I replace it so I can see what happened in there!

OMG what an impossible task. Sending this one out to a shop. UPDATE - I found some photos where a guy managed to clean the switch after taking it apart, and another who did this without removing the switch. I've got mine loose and accessible where I think I might just give this a try! www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=294653

Cleaned the switch inside and out without disconnecting, remounted and calibrated and now works perfectly.. except still can't get the "P" to display in the dash. Must be in the connector which I can't reach.

Glad you were able to get it. Looks like a rather problematic device to complete such a simple task.

Thanks. Wish I could have replaced it with the new switch.. then I would at least know the connector was properly connected.

Since I couldn't reach the harness clip, I just took the switch loose from the tranny and opened up the halves while it was hanging. Then I sprayed it with electronic cleaner, polished up the contacts with very fine wet/dry sandpaper, and wiped the inside with a thin film of dielectric grease.

I cleaned the switch today but sometimes two of any of the lights lit at the same time. I will test it on the road and let you know.
