I know I introduced with XLS, but that's before I pulled my head out. It's really an LTD. It's got 172K mi.. and I really like it. Of course, shortly after I bought it, the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. I haven't followed up on the code yet, but the transmission seems to go wack with hard and indecisive shifting, particularly 2nd to 3rd and a mild drone at around 60 mph. I thought it was due to low voltage from a junk battery they included in the sale. After it failed and was replaced, the tranny problem and the SES light stayed away until days later, when I was out on the highway and the SES light came back on. Tranny problems came back too. I disconnected the battery for 15 seconds or so...SES light didn't come back and it's back to good tranny behavior. I expect this cycle to continue. Anybody familiar with these symptoms? I haven't been under the hood enough to know if it has a tranny cooler. Do they come with one?

Mine's a 2001 Ltd with identical mileage. The trans fluid runs through the bottom of the radiator for cooling but was insufficient in my case. Added a cooler and cured the AT/Temp light issue permanently. Would highly recommend you head over to the parts shop and get that code, or pick up a OBD2 reader to have on hand.

Yeah, I'll have code info this weekend. Did I erase the error code when I disconnected the battery? Do I need the SES light to come on again before testing?

Some of the better ones it will show up as a pending code with the SES light off. Most of the basic ones that the auto parts stores use need the light to be on to pull a code.

Also can pick up a bluetooth one for super cheap that you leave in, and then download the Torque app for your smart phone, link them and it works as well as most decent OBDII scanners, inclding reading pending codes.

I was able to pull the error codes. They were all misfires. I've since run a bottle of B12 Chemtool through the fuel system. I thought it ran smoothly before, but after running the treated fuel for about 20 miles, another level of smoothness, power and gas mileage has been achieved. The SES light hasn't shown up since. The transmission is working well because I haven't been disconnecting the battery to ditch the SES light. I've been getting very close to 20 mpg. I checked mileage after running the treated and it was about the same. Although I was running the snot out of it to get the "high flow" cleaning effect. This tank mpg should be really good. I'm at 172 miles reading 1/2 tank. B12 Chemtool was $3.17.

That sure beats the BG 44K at $11. I couldn't tell any difference in my Sport, but remarkable improvement in my Audi. The Sport has always run smoothly (until the IAC and EGR solenoid went south).

Your post made me order an $8 bluetooth OBD2 dongle from Ebay. The Torque app came with on a CD. I have a really cheap smart phone that I don't use as a phone, so I didn't have to go online to load the Torque app. I'm really impressed with what my $8 gave me. Of course, it will check for error codes. You can log them and reset them. I think I'll buy the Torque Pro app. I believe it provides tranny info. I'd recommend this for anyone without OBD2 access. The only problem I have with my cheap dongle is an occasional crazy speedometer - after a restart, it goes back to normal. I've heard the cheap ones are a gamble on how well they work. A good dongle goes for around $60.

I've got the same setup.. bluetooth dongle and Torque Pro. Works on every vehicle and displays pending codes as well.

There's an additional add on app to Torque Pro, I haven't gotten it, but it is designed to add additional features to Torque Pro for Mitsubishi vehicles, adds additional reading and sensors. Makes it similar to the dealer OBD scanners. If anyone does spend the 5.00 for the add on app, let me know if it is worth it.

Depends on your definition of 'useful'. Most of the PIDs are not available on Sports. Its not that you can't read them or someone hasn't written a whatever to read them - they flat don't exist in the ECM/PCM. This IS NOT similar to a MUT - not even close. Edward
