Though I finally had resolved all the bugs on my 2002 Sport XLS since I just found the solution to the engine hesitation recently.....but a very big & sad thing happened last night, truck just quit on me while driving about 3 miles from home.....found that the crankshaft pulley fell off out its place thus loosing steering, AC & charging...was able to park it at a nearby Pepboys then got it towed this morning to my fave vietnamese repair shop.....mechanic found that the bolt that holds the pulley was broken....initial quote was $850 to take out the engine and attempt on drilling out/taking out the broken bolt but still no guarantee....worst case scenario is replacing the whole crankshaft or the engine itself....now I am contemplating to go ahead on spending much money or forgo with the repairs and send the truck the junkyard?...does anybody know any recall about the pulley?...It has about 180K miles on it......still contemplating to take the risk and spend much money, any advice would really help....thanks!

Ouch. Good set of screw extractors would probably save it. Pieces are usually pretty easy to get out once the head breaks off regardless of much torque was originally applied, given that it is accessible. There was recall on the crankshaft bolt for those that were assembled in Mexico. Covered a couple of years affecting the 00 and up. Easy way to tell is look at the vin on the dash. If it starts with an M chances are it was included.

Thanks a lot, dclambertt & jkdv8!
Had put much love, sweat & blood on my monty.....I'll try to fork out some more money to take out the bolt & save the truck but when it comes to a point that the engine had to be replaced, then that would probably my turning point....At least I can happily say to myself, I still want it and would try a last ditch effort to keep it.
My VIn starts with "J".....Do you happen to know the NHSTA safety recall code/no.?....can't seem to find anything on the net.

Hmm. Yeah J was Japan so yours shouldn't be affected. I couldn't find it either. This was some time ago but there still should be a record of it. Only thing I found affected the Montero. Seems it included the 00 and 01 sports. Could contact Mitsubishi they could tell you. Chances are they wouldn't do anything anyways considering the time and mileage.

Very happy today!......finally got to take home my Monty....felt like it was born again and surprisingly smoother than ever......total damage was $1065 with 10% discount for engine mount & dismount plus bolt extraction....then another $300 for the timing belt parts.....didn't have to pay for labor on the timing belt anymore since the engine was already out and they're working on the crankshaft anyway.....the broken bolt extraction is quite a PITA but glad that my trusty shop was able to take it out and save the crankshaft so much so the total engine ...my monty is now back & felt invigorated!!!

Glad it is back with you and running good. Yea, same! That balancer bolt sucks. Never had one go, but I've had my big Sport since the original TSB was issued back in '98 so I've always known about the issue and keep a pretty close eye on things. Edward

Update on my monty: The Interstate battery that came with the truck since I bought it more than 4 years ago has showed signs that it has seen its days....two mornings almost wouldn't crank and you just hear it ticks/clicks.....got another Interstate as replacement.....truck now runs like a champ and not hesitating at all even with all lights on, ac on and foot on the brakes (shifter on drive).....the dying battery must be the culprit of the hesitations/dying that I was having before.....hope I'm finally over this time with all the critters so me & my truck will still have longer days to share....
