I have a "97 which suddenly developed a rod knock after accidentally being driven in 2nd gear on the expressway with low oil.
A rebuild to correct the rod knock is most likely outside of my budget, so I would like to replace the engine entirely.
I am told that the engine I have is a 3.5L but I have not been able to confirm this. The original motor was a 3.0L. I'm wondering where on the block the VIN is located so that I can be sure which motor I have.

Mitsubishi dealer informed me that the easiest way to ID the engine it to locate the part number stamped on one of the timing belt covers so that he can cross-reference it. Going to try that today.

I believe the engine numbers are 6G72 = 3.0L and 6G74 = 3.5L The Vehicle ID Code Plate is located inside the hood, high on the cowl, just below the windshield wipers. Ahhh, but you said it's not the original engine. Forgot that.

As I suspected the motor was a 3.0 all along. Found a replacement for $750 but I'm checking the yards tomorrow to see if I can find one worth pulling myself for $200.

The 3.5L was never available in the '97-'98. First year was '99 (only) in the Limited. While its possible that someone could have replaced the 3.0L in your Sport with a 3.5L, you'd know by now. Its not a direct swap. Edward
