2001 montero sport xls automatic 4x4 3.0l
So I had advance pull my codes yesterday.
I had the cat code I expected p0431. Efficiency Bank 2 below threshold. New o2s still have the code. Got to be the cat.
The dang egr code again p0401. We had the intake cleaned, the egr and egr solenoid replaced a few monthes back. Why does this keep coming back? Truck has not been seafoam ed yet. Should I give it a shot???
The code that threw me... the torque converter clutch solenoid P0740... wtf! Tranny was replaced 20,000 miles ago with a replacement from LKQ. The tranny shop was supposed to go thru it. They promptly went out of business. Well we just did a trans filter when I had a trans fluid leak. About 3000-4000 miles ago. Reg Shop thought it was the pan gasket. It was a clogged vent line forcing fluid out the dipstick. Trucks been fine as far as driving and shifting. So I'm clueless. What does this one mean for my beast? Anything I can check to see if this is a false code or hiccup? Only thing I have ever noticed is that it shifts odd when I'm creeping on neighborhood roads like it can't decide which gear to be in... but that happens if you hover right at the shift threashold... right?
So the 0431 was in there once. The other 2 were in there 2x.
On a side note...awful clatter shoes up at cold start. Tracked it today. Timing cover is cracked in 3 places and had shifted to the drivers side. Was contacting something inside. A push on the drivers side to the passengers and all quiet. Bet it got busted 2000 miles ago when the shop did the water pump. Same time they opsied and left the crank pulley bolt not tq proper and it backed out.
Also...I'm still trying to track my oil leak. M-f Hour drive to work hour drive home. (30 miles) mixed traffic. Takes two weeks but I loose a quart of oil. Dumped 7 cans of brake cleaner on everything to see where the leak shows first.
While laying under it I noticed some uneven wear on the new front tires... cupping on the outside tread.... shocks? This beast Is gonna single handedly break the bank.

Sorry I forgot to post the miles... 245,000. Been fighting oil leak since we got it at 225,000. Timing belt and front cam seals done together at 225,000. Timing cover was fine then. Will get pics... Had Valve cover gaskets replaced same time. It was still leaking oil, but the oil pan bolt was fubar. Had it Heil coiled and fixed it's all good now. Then the trans was pucking fluid. Fixed that. Still have the oil leak.... ugh.
So I asked shop at last oil change. They say its the valve covers. I said you replaced them already with felpro rubber gaskets. How can they fail? Could have been immediate but Noticed the leak at 16,000 miles after the replacement were put in. They won't warrenty the seal. I'm not convinced they are the issue. Going to replace the rear cam seals as they have not been touched. Poor truck has oil everywhere.
Scrubbed the oil pan and bottom of Ac and alternator. Oil filter was caked. Driverside engine mount was caked as well. Problem is the shop never cleaned it after they fixed the seals so it's hard to tell what's from before. Grrr...
Crawled under today after 30 mile round trip. Did not notice new to the front of motor. Ran out of brake cleaner yesterday and Missed cleaning oil off rear of oil pan. That was still wet and had run down onto diff. Makes it look like its leaking. Ugh.... guess I will get more and spray and scrub.... maybe some dye for the oil after.

When you replaced the O2 sensors, did you use OEM, Denso, or Bosch, advance auto? I had replaced one with a bosch, and still was getting codes, that was when I started to read these forums. So I ordered all 4 O2 sensors from Denso, direct fits. Not the universal ones. I had all 4 installed in the propper locations (I almost mixxed up the 2 back ones for right->left.. Took care of my lights, and codes.

Dirk.... the shop did it. I think he used O'Reilly. They might be Bosch that he used. Wish I could test the cat to know if it's ok...

If you're using a generic egr solenoid I would suggest replacing it with an oem. Same goes for the oxygen sensors like dirk mentioned. Some of the electronics on these trucks do not like anything but original components. It is a bit more but worth not dealing with the headache of inferior components.
You can check if the cat is working by monitoring the front and rear O2 sensor with obd software.
Trans codes can arise if the engine isn't working right. Wouldn't worry about that one unless it pops up by itself. However, I wouldn't drive it anymore to minimize the risk of doing further damage.

What really sucks about all this is getting the parts from Mitsu. Not that I don't want to buy genuine, but the dealership I have to deal with.... The local dealer is a Cadillac/saab/mitsu. They like to charge over MSRP if you come in as a person. Not to mention they stock nothing and its a week minimum to get it. So I guess I have to order everything online. Then you have to factor in shipping cost now. So its not just oh crap I need this... let me go get it. Now I have to find it online pray I pick the right thing and order it and pay shipping. Pain in my A$$. And after the crap reception I got trying to buy $100.00 in parts from them... I won't do it on principle now. I'd rather pay more online then ever give them a dime. Not the first run in I have had with them over this truck. They must hate Mitsu owners there or something. Dang caddy folks have their nose up their tails. No hi, no smile. Had to ask the cashier for help to get the parts guy to even acknowledge me. He was standing around the corner and could clearly hear me talking, but choose not to acknowledge us. 2.5 years he has worked there but he can't order parts on his own or decide if they can match online prices.
Words I thought I would never say, but I REALLY APPRECIATE HONDA! They match anything online and get the parts next day or actually have them in stock. They are open after work and long weekend hours. They smile and remember you. And I did not even buy the car from them. Just our used Honda that I get some misc stuff from now and again! LOL!
Rant off...

It's always a good idea to find the part numbers for what you need. A lot of times the service department can help you out but, in your case I would suggest checking out another. Mitsubishiparts.net is good. There is another that's sometimes cheaper but don't remember the name. There are like 3 or 4 that I've seen mentioned on here. You can usually use the exploded diagram on these sites to find the part number however, some of the dealers look the part number up by vin with some trucks of the same year using identical parts with two different part numbers.

yes the dealer wanted the vin... took my diagrams and verified the part numbers were correct and out of stock LOL! Going to probably call the one that is an hour away and see if they will match online prices. if not then I guess I will order. Worst case I will have the shop call and see what they get quoted for parts

The dreaded P401 code came back on my monty again.....also replaced the solenoid a while back and I'm lost on ideas too. Update on the dreaded P0401 code on my monty.....cleaned all the vacuum lines and removed the EGR valve, found a lot of carbon build up on the inner walls....sprayed it with a throttle body cleaner and use a brush and screw driver to remove all the carbon that have caked up over time......had more than 130 miles ran today, no CEL/SES....run to the closest emission center and passed the GA emission test......had to do it way advanced for it's december renewal before the SES light comes back again....y'all know our monty's,lol....

Lol! One city over and I would be gold. Some used to be able to get PO boxes in the other city and avoid the emissions
