All,
overnight it seems something happened to the car. I haven't experienced it yet, but my wife has on her last drive. Trying to get a OBD II scanned to see what code its throwing...
Maybe fuel filter/fuel pump?
Plugs?
Alternator is fine, battery is fine, no dimming of lights, etc....so I don't believe its that issue this time.
She wants a new car though now...so I'm not sure how much longer the Monty is going to remain in the family.
Any thoughts...more to come if I can diagnose a bit this weekend.

Probably idle air control (IAC) or a vacuum leak. Pulling the code would point you in the right direction. Just take it to an auto parts store.

When was the last time you changed plugs and wires? It's a bit of a PITA but if you want to remove the plug and inspect it, see if oil has leaked and fouled the plug? Make sure all the ignitions connections are good. Just incase a boot or connection is bad.

They're usually good for 60K+ some making a 100 or more. You could try checking the wire connection. Don't remember which cylinder is 3 and how easy it is to get to. If there is water or oil down the tube they usually end up inoperable requiring plug and wire change and the valve cover gaskets if oil is present.

what plug is everyone running on this thing? I see that some say the Bosch give them problems...which NGK part number are people using?
NGK 5464 {#7964, BKR5EIX11} Iridium IX ?

Most use ngk plug and wires. Not sure of the part number. As long as they are the iridium tipped.

Found out its definitely the wires and plugs... I have one wire arch/shorting out near the ignition coil..Clicking like crazy as it fires. I do have a question...I bought everything I needed through RockAuto to get the job done right the first time...but are you guys putting copper RTV sealant on the gaskets or are you just putting them down undressed? I have read a lot on this but the DIY doesn't even mention RTV but some posts on the forum do. Thoughts?

Intake manifold gasket. Valve cover too? That's why I figured I would ask the norm for this car

I used two LONG BOLTS with the head ground off to keep the gasket aligned with the bolt holes. I wouldn't use silicone on the manifold gasket. I WOULD use copper shelac on the valve covers. And make sure they're not warped before you install new gaskets on them. Use a dull butter knife and a propane torch to heat up old gasket and scrape it out CAREFULLY.

Yea the shop manual states to use 3M sealant or equivalent on the valve covers and the tube seals. Don't remember which one though.

bdmontero dirk jkdv8Well, I got into the job and I have to say...It has been a lot of fun to get it ripped down this far. Definitely need time and patience but overall its pretty fair job. So I pulled out the plugs from Cylinder 2, 4, & 6 and they are all full of oil. The seals looked as if they were not lined up correctly when the last mechanic completed the work and it looks like the seal was just not doing what it was supposed to do. I took my time and replaced the valve cover gasket and the tube seals. Letting it drain out completely from tube overnight and I might end up getting back to the job tomorrow night or maybe next weekend. I will tackle the passenger side... Question though...should I replace fuel inject seals at this time or should I just let them go and not fool with them? I bought them just to make sure I had them all...I'm thinking since I have it completely stripped down it might be best if I knock them out at the same time. Kind of fell back in love with truck after getting this far into it.
