It does not light up, its purely a cosmetic piece.
It doesn't even reflect light, at least the 2000-2005 versions don't.

I thought about playing with mine to see if there was room to do something similar to the Dodges. Mine leaks and has to be opened up and the gasket replaced anyway... If I screw it up I got a spare from the junkyard a year ago...

Sheet of led's was what I was thinking... Or the old old school way of doing halos. An acrylic rod that has ben scored and an led at each end. Be easier then the amount of led strips to get the same effect. Plus the strips have so much space bw leds. our mustangs amp rack utilized a similar principle

I have entertained this idea before. First thought was to put one of the light strips that go under the tailgate of trucks but don't beleive there will be room. Also wanted brake, tail, reverse, and turn. The piece is really dark so it may take quite a bit of light to shine through. Also the wiper and the key hole are in the way so there is really only room for one run of whatever that would go all the way across. I was thinking of 3-5 watt smd LEDs it in a couple of different lengths. So what I was contemplating is doing one run all the way across and shorter ones on either side.
______________________________ Tail/brake ___________ ___________ Turn ______ ______ Reverse
Something like that..... Didn't post the way it was written......

www.ledunderbody.com/49-Inch-TailFlex-Truck-LED-Tailgate-Light-Bar.aspxSomething like this is what I was thinking. Not sure how wide that piece is but, maybe one of all 3 sizes facing the back facing some reflective material or one top and bottom so you don't see any shadows. Should be bright enough. If not could sand the texture out and polish the inside. Adding reverse to all 3 probably wouldn't be nessecary with them being white cause it's a bit more for adding that. They also have the Y adapter to tap into the trailer harness but I would probably cut the connectors and solder. I was considering something similar for the bumper reflectors awhile back but haven't come up with a good plan of attack on either setup.

might work... the leds have a decent gap between them though... not sure how that would translate. Might look striped or spotty. As for the inside... you could go with a chrome vinyl adhesive on the inside to simulate the inside of a light to reflect out. Or contact a sign shop that works with vinyl. Some have the same reflective material that they use on cop cars. Works like our license plates. Could get a sheet of red to put inside? The light from the leds would light it up as would cars when headlight hit it... maybe? Would take some experimenting for effects... Well when the chaos at home slows & it warms up I will be messing around with it. right now I'm afraid the cold will make the plastic way brittle. The replacement one I have I snapped a leg on and it was in the 90s. I have the part and figured I would just JBweld it back on.

Mine was scratched and a bit faded so I got a Vinyl for it It's been there for a year now, and looks a bit faded compared to how it was from day 1 so I will replace it one of these days with a different color to match the beige/gold lower paint and maybe a different camo design. the LED idea would be cool tho...
