Has anyone from Kalifornistan bought "cats" for a MS from "California Legal Cats" (on ebay I think) and passed smog in CA with one?
i have tried the standard auto parts stores, incl napa, carquest and CA rejects any made for our montero sport except from the dealer. Price diff is about $250 for out of state cats (aka federal)vs CA Dlr $800-900 .
Anyone from CA that has purchased one (not dealers) AND passed smog?

Has anyone from Kalifornistan bought "cats" for a MS from "California Legal Cats" (on ebay I think) and passed smog in CA with one? .... Not from CA, but I did get a CA legal aftermarket CAT a couple years ago. It did pass CO emissions but not very well. I replaced it after two years with one recommended by the muffler shop - not CA legal - (two actually) and then with a Mitsu OEM CAT. The Mitsu OEM CAT is WAY better. Costs go up with the amount of platinum in the CAT, that's why they cost so much more. The cheap CATS - in my experience - don't last very long. The techs have been telling me this for years and I experienced it several times myself - a lot of the cheap CATs cause issues. Both with the ECM/PCM and with driveability. After half a dozen years of screwing around with CATs, I finally bit the bullet and went back to the OEM CAT. I figure I blew close to $1000 on CATs and my time. More than the cost of a new OEM CAT. BTW, the original was still working after 10 years. Unfortunately I managed to crack the case open on a couple rocks. Edward

Thanks edward! very useful info just the same. My oem cats have all passed CA smogs since new in 01 @ 225K. The smog man said I might expect to have to replace it next smog ck which is this year. Too bad the cats dont bolt on both ends. from what I recall they are welded on one end. This must be to prevent easy removal by ...platinum thiefs .

The down-pipe CATS are actually a unit - integrated CAT into the down-pipe. The CAT is not intended to be replaced independent of the down-pipe. You may laugh, but when platinum prices started going up that actually became an issue. Edward

I too live in CA and when I bought my MITS yrs ago I was able to find a smog shop that offered aftermarket CATS for $500. When I was due for smog a few yrs back, I had to get a OEM front welded Cat from dealer that cost about $1,100 if memory serves me right. That is still on til this day, no problems and fingers crossed!

i REMEMBER hearing of thefts pof cats and copper theives a few years ago .i was During the rise then through the peak in noble metals in may of 06,as I recall It will happen again. About four years ago, one of my local U-Haul shops had tweleve of their cats stolen overnight. Last summer I was awoken 2am ish(I am a light sleeper and always have the window open) by a vechile coming into my driveway and parking next to my girlfriends Nissan SUV. Saw two subjects and yelled 'hey what are you doing' by the time I got outside they backed up fast turned around and had their headlights off as they went down the street fast, in their Nissan SUV. First thing I checked to see if her cats were stolen. LUCKILY, I caught them right before, but this seems to be common now. Reported it to local PD and they agreed there has been several CATS stolen in the county.

I installed non California cats on mine and it passed. I don't think they are going to crawl around to find the California sticker.

But doesn't it have more sensors Just the o2 bungs. Yep. The Gen 2 down-pipe cats have a before and after O2 sensor. I've looked at the CAL and FED down-pipes and they look identical to me. What little I've found from research is that typically the CAL CATs have more platinum than the FED CATs. They're just more efficient. That is the case for CAL and FED CATs that look physically the same, of course. Some actually are physically different due to the addition of other emissions equipment. Edward
