Bought used Montero ..guy said he accidentally crossed battery cables and was having all kinds of problems. I have bought new battery and alternator... That fixed most of the warning lights issues. Now only thing I need to figure out is why it won't accelerate correctly... I put it in reverse works fine no problem there ... But when I put it in drive I literally have to push the gas pedal half way down THEN it will slowly start moving...any ideas?

hope Edward will chime in soon, I would think your PCM was damaged due to the previous crossed battery connection...

Once it's going it changes gears fine..if I come to a stop same thing happens...any ideas? The '97-'98 has a separate ECM (ECU) and TCM (TCU). The former controls the engine, and the latter controls the transmission. In later years Mitsu switched to a PCM which is just an integrated ECM and TCM in one unit. If the PO crossed the battery cables and based on what you're describing, it could be several issues. I would start with pulling the OBD codes from the ECM and TCM. To pull the ECM codes you will need an OBD-II scanner. It sounds like you've already done that. Are there any remaining codes? The process to pull the TCM codes is different and are not accessible with an OBD-II scanner. I don't have my '97-8 FSMs handy and I don't remember the process off the top of my head. Several others hear have done this before so hopefully they can chime in. Crossing the battery cables can definitely damage both or either of the ECM and TCM modules and it will not necessarily (unfortunately) light up the CEL or the TCM indicator. Its also possible that one or more sensors or solenoids were damaged. Hopefully that will show up with a code, but .... Check the TCM and see if anything comes up and let us know. Edward

No more warning lights on dash. Replaced (tps)..throttle postion sensor And idle air control valve...before the idle would go up and down for about 2 minutes then it would cut off. now the idle still goes up and down but does not cut off.
Have not hooked up to a scanner yet. Any thoughts or idea's would be greatly appreciated... Thank u

You need to check for OBD codes and see if there's anything there at all, then check for codes from the transmission TCM. Once you're sure there's nothing there on either unit, you can proceed with troubleshooting. There's no point in guessing if you can get the modules to tell you what's wrong. Fluctuating idle can be caused by the ECM, MAF, MAP, and just about every other engine sensor from my experience. Or combination. Edward

As far as I know, lenght of cabels shouldnt allow for connecting + on - and vice versa.

As far as I know, lenght of cabels shouldnt allow for connecting + on - and vice versa. You could cross connect them using a reversed pole battery. My moms Ranger has the wires in the opposite position as my Sport

Really? I thought that - is always on the left, when you are in front of battery and poles are closer to you. Didnt know that.

Really? I thought that - is always on the left, when you are in front of battery and poles are closer to you. Didnt know that. Nope. I just bought a brand new battery for my '03 and they had two side by side of the same group - Pos left, Neg right and Neg left and Pos right. They are absolutely identical otherwise. The sales guy even checked with me three times to make sure of what configuration I needed. Positive and negative posts are different diameters which is supposed to prevent accidentally hooking the cables up backward, but if the terminals are old - like ours are now - its absolutely possible to put the Pos and Neg terminals on the wrong posts. You are correct about the length. There is no way anyone could 'accidentally' hook the positive cable to the negative post if they were using the correct battery. The positive cables on my '97s, '99 and '03 are barely long enough to fit on a taller battery let alone stretch all the way to the negative post. Edward

Didnt know that. ever wondered why some battery size/type/model has an R like 26R?.....That's for reverse polarity, had one like that on wifey's PT Cruiser......also like Edward has said, the military grade terminals that I bought recently had the positive side hole bigger than the negative, same on the battery pole.

Come to think of it, I always go to shops that sell and install the battery.

Hmmm. The 'R' I didn't know about. Never actually paid any attention since I always check the terminal marks. I don't know how widespread this is, but the bolts like our Positive terminal uses to attach the cable to the terminal are also different. 5/16" and 3/8". My Monster terminals were all 5/16", but when I was looking for terminals a couple months ago I ran across a lot that were different depending on Pos and Neg. Edward
