I would love to eventually swap my open rear differential for a factory LSD. I have a good "you pull it" junkyard near by and will be keeping an eye out. I have a 2000 3.0 with 4.90 gears. Are there any models with LSD that would swap over? How about a 3.5 limited with 4.90 gears and LSD? Also how much stuff would I need to pull? Just the diff itself? The whole axle?
I've done some searching but haven't found a definitive answer. Thanks for the help!

Its easy and all you need is the center section.

Its easy and all you need is the center section. Irregardless of gear ratio or engine size?

I want Ed's rear axle so bad. Most likely drive up there and get it from him. Super excited to meet him!

My '99 limited came with a factory air locker. Might be an option if you can find one.

The LTD/XLS with the factory lockers (3.5L) would have 4.63 gears, and the 9.5" ring gear - same as the Montero.
The '00+ 3.0L would have 4.9 gears and 9" ring gear. Not a direct swap.
There are *SOME* axles from other vehicles that share the same ring gear bolt spacing and thickness despite different ring gear diameters - this is a slim chance that someone would need to verify with a day in the junkyard, but it *MIGHT* be possible that the 9" ring gear would bolt to the SR/XLS differential, and the differential *MIGHT* fit in the 9" axle housing. Probably not, but I don't know for sure.
Other than that...it's likely ARB, or a custom full axle swap requiring some fabrication to put the SR/XLS rear axle under your MS, with the front gearing to match.

I've been wanting to know the differential gear ratio in my 3.5xs. now that I know that. I definitely want to go find the 4.9s now. I've always loved the 4.9's

I've always loved the 4.9's There is a steel plate dead center of the firewall that has info about your axle, including gear ratio (albeit a bit cryptic). Easiest to take a cell phone pick of it and read it off your phone. I JUST did this like last week on my 99 Limited.
