I have a question about the gear oil for the front and rear diffenerials for my 99 MS Limited. I checked AllData and it calls for 75W-90 GL-5. We have TONS of 75W-140 GL-4 just sitting around at work. Would this be ok to use in the MS diff's? The gear oil we have is what Chrysler calls for for the diff's in Jeeps.

There's not much difference between those two oils thickness-wise, but the 140 would have better thermal protection at higher operating temperatures and actually be better in colder climates. As far as the difference between GL-4 and GL-5, I believe that basically the GL-5 has more friction additives than GL-4. In a limited slip differential, it might be better to follow the manufacturers recommendation than to take a chance.

Awesome! No limited slip, but it does have the factory air locker. Looks like I'll be doing diff services very soon!

Front what I understand, you can substitute GL4 for GL5. I've run GL4 in my Mitsu diffs without any issues, but never long term. Not any more than my usual 2 year diff fluid change schedule, at least. GL5 can also be used in place of GL4, but ONLY in devices that do not contain brass. The additives in GL5 will dissolve things like brass syncro rings in transfer cases and M/T transmissions. I accidentally put GL5 in the t-case many years ago - believe me, you DO NOT want to go there. I would strongly recommend sticking to the GL rating the manufacturer specifies, however. As far as weights, they're equivalent, so 75-85 (or whatever) is 75-85 irrespective of the GL rating. Edward

I ended up finding GL5 at the shop so I used that in the front and rear diff's But VERY good to know that GL5 dissolves brass!!

Yep, I had to really dig to find GL4 for my transfer case when I drained and filled a while ago. The salesman really didn't believe me when I told him I had to use GL4, not GL5.

I checked again at work today and the stuff we put in Jeep transfer cases is GL4...I think it's called Syncro-shift?? But yeah, we do have both GL4 and GL5. Already did my transfer case though
