So a little over 4 years but less than 15,000 miles and my Quality Power HO alternator has been acting up.

That's crazy. Any oil getting in there?

Yea I thought so to but had my doubts as to the quality from the get go. It's a tall order to make a budget HO alternator without cutting corners. Should've been a red flag when the guy asked me what the idle rpm was. Leads me to believe they just rig them to offer more peak power at higher RPMs rather than rewinding for higher output. Granted it appeared to be in the same casting was suspect as well. Oh well live and learn. Thought I would throw it out for those who were in the market for one.
It was dry last time I checked. I had the timing belt, water pump, and seals done prior to installing it and checked it awhile back when the issue was intermittent and again a month or so ago when it became the norm. Suppose I could go over all the wiring and make sure everything is good and double check the inline fuse on the battery + however, I doubt I will find anything awry. Often suspected it was faulty from the random electronic gremlins that appeared shortly after the install.

I've been through a few of the cheap ho alternators for my ms. One from Ebay died. One from amazon died as well. They always seem to die the same way; they will work fine for a while, they they will stop charging for a bit and then start and then stop. Finally they just die all together. It's like something inside of them is overheating. To the Amazon one to a shop that rebuilds alts and starters and they said it wasn't even an ho to begin with. They said to make more output you have to put more wire windings in and there isn't really enough room to do that in that particular alternator case. I really wasn't even pushing my alternator that hard, just an electric fan setup and a 400 watt amp for my stereo. I've been using a 110 amp autozone alternator out of a 2004 Montero and it's lasted the longest. I've also been using a Group 27 battery which helps as well. Literally fits like it was made for our sports.

Thanks for that. I'll look into it. Do you have a part number. I've looked at them before and didn't see any over 85 amps.
Yea heat is definitely an issue with the stock case and fan. Most of them probably are not true HO alternators, especially the real cheap ones. This one was only $300 and 170 amps so it's not too far fetched however..... Wish I had the means to test it before the install. I checked with autozone prior and their machine doesn't give the amperage just indicates if it's good or bad.
Edit: Nevermind I saw it on there. I must have tried every combination of year, make, and model except the 04.

You want the alternator for the 2002 montero full size, nit the sport. My bad the 2004 wont work. The difference is that the plug is on the side instead of the back. And I guess its a 100 and not a 110 but it still helps.

It may still work if there is enough slack in the harness, granted the wiring is the same. Anyone with an 04 06 Montero service manual??

Theres enough slack so It works on my ms. The thing with the 110 alternator on the newer Monteros is the the plug for the alternator is different. It has extra wires. Maybe theres a way to make it work? This is from autozones page for a 110 amp Montero alternator off of a 3.8 Picture of socket on alternator.

From autozone again. This is the stock 85 amp. Wonder if we could just hook those 2 wires up to the 110 amp and make it work?

Yea that could be a problem. So the first pic is a 100 amp from an 02 Montero. 100 is better than 85 but really like to make the 110 work. If I can find a cheap service manual for the 04-06 Montero I'll check it out. Sounds like it's externally regulated and controlled by the pcm/ecm. There are ways around it but just adds another failure point.

So I put in the alt from the 02 Montero over the weekend. Great tip loner6996. Hopefully this one will last a good while.

Once again yall save my butt, I knew something was out there for my sport above and beyond stock. And you guys solved that issue. I took mine off and took it to the rebuilder, once I mentioned a Denso Remaned unit, he told me "buy it" said it would be 200% of my stock unit being rebuilt. And he said they usually test 5-10% over rating. Something about a flat stator? $132.29 with a $60 core charge thru Summit Racing.

pinstryper hopefully you have better luck with summit. I ordered one with a two week wait period and after a month I still didn’t have it so ended up canceling it and bought one from the auto parts store.

I am in the process of finding a 100amp alternator that will bolt up to the Gen 1 sports. It looks like the full size 1998 montero's alternator will work but I still need to put my hands on it to confirm. I work at a parts store, however that particular alternator is not common.
Do not be fooled by Oreilly's alternator listing showing a 90amp for the gen 1 sports, it is probably an 85amp like it's supposed to be. Gonna throw one on the test bench and see what it outputs tomorrow.

I got one from advanced. It stated a 100 amp so hopefully it’s legit. I did have to reroute the harness as mentioned because the plug is on the bottom but overall it was an easy install. I also had to align the bolt holes.
