Hi everyone. As I was inspecting my car today, I tried to check and see if the 4x4 works all fine since I will be taking it on a snow road trip next week. I put the vehicle in N, shifted to 4H but the light did not come on. Now I can feel it being stuck between 4h and 4L (only moves left to right, and visually its in the middle of the shifting pattern, not down right when in 2wd). I tried accelerating to see if the 4h light would blink but it did not and I'm confused whether it really is stuck. I could not shift to 4l either. Any help appreciated.

It’s likely that the shifter fulcrum ball has shattered and causing your issue. I’m dealing with the same issue in mine as well. Here’s a link to a thread about the problem: msport97.proboards.com/post/55984/threadHere’s another thread that might explain why your 4H light isn’t coming on: msport97.proboards.com/post/53340/thread

Funny enough I feel a grinding noise when trying to shift to 2wd. Have you experienced anything like that? Also, have you managed to drive on freeway just fine?

Thanks I will definitely check it out. Funny enough I feel a grinding noise when trying to shift to 2wd. Have you experienced anything like that? Also, have you managed to drive on freeway just fine? No, haven’t experienced the grinding because I moved the shifter while the vehicle was off. I’ve only had mine running for about a week, so I really haven’t messed with the transfer case shifter very much. Same as you, I decided to try the shifter in mine (while the motor was still torn down) just to see if it would work and ended up stuck in 4H. After completing the motor work, I drove it like this for a few days and even made an interstate run just to test it. It didn’t seem to have any problems, but I know from experience that these systems are not designed to be driven in this mode full-time. A few days ago, I partially disassembled the shifter in mine and somehow managed to get it back into AWD mode and will not touch it again till I have more time. Here’s a thread about others having the same grinding issue as you: msport97.proboards.com/post/58314/threadThey say that it’s supposed to be in neutral before attempting to shift into 4H and back again.

The common failure points are the shifter fulcrum as mentioned, the freewheel clutch solenoid (4WD models, AWD did away with it) as well as the vacuum lines under the airbox, and the switches on the transfer case. The switches however usually wake up after shifting in and out of all three positions multiple times. I would start by replacing the fulcrum and go from there. Unlikely possibility is the 4WD light is burnt out. Driving in 4WD makes a distinct noise and the rear tires will chirp on turns. Not recommended to do on dry pavement. I've had the grinding noise before. Shattered fulcrum was preventing it from going all the way in 4L and it actually jumped out of 4L when I hit a bump and started grinding. If everything is in sync you should be able to shift from 2WD to 4H while moving, steering wheel straight, no brake, no acceleration. On mine only going from 4H to 4L requires you to be stopped and the trans in neutral. As for speeds no more than 30mph in 4L and 60mph in 4H if I remember correctly. Granted if the conditions require either you probably shouldn't be going that fast anyways
