I've got a '99 Montero Sport LTD, with 130,000 miles, which i use as a part-time utility vehicle and foul weather transportation. I replaced the valve stem seals a few years ago, and just did the timing belt & water pump & cam seals. Transmission fluid has been maintained properly, and the vehicle runs well. A couple days ago, my daughter was crossing a busy street, and was struck in the rear quarter. I think the impact was directly on the drivers side rear wheel, straight down the axle. The impact was hard enough to spin the montero 180 degrees (the Ford Focus that hit her was seriously totalled). I went to help her out, and was able to drive it a couple blocks back to our house, but there's clearly some damage to the drivetrain. I jacked up the rear end and put it in drive. The passenger wheel spins when it's in "drive", but the drivers side only turns if I rotate it by hand. I don't have a trusted mechanic to consult, since I do most of my work myself. So what do you think? Is it likely the rear end would need to be replaced? Is this something I can find, and is it a straightforward job? Since Blue Book value is only a couple grand, is this totalled? Thanks, Peter

So I see that I can pick up a used rear axle assembly from a 99 LTD on ebay for under $300 delivered. I'm looking at chapter 27 in the workshop manual to get a feeling for whether or not this is something I can do myself. The manual just shows 3 steps: 1) remove brake calipers, 2) remove drive shaft, and 3) remove rear axle assembly. That makes it sound so easy. I know its probably not. I've got a motorcycle jack I can use to lower the axle. I've used it to lower the engine out of my old Chevy Corvair. Does anybody know if there are complications that are not described in the workshop manual that would make this job problematic for an amateur?

You might also try www.car-part.com for parts. Does your MS have anti-lock brakes? If so, the wiring to the sensors would need disconnected. Does your MS have the rear locking diff? If so, the air line would need disconnected. The lower shock mounts would need disconnected too. The brake line would need disconnected. There may be other pieces, I'm not thinking of.

Thanks for the reminder to check car-part.com.
My MS does have anti-lock brakes and R/D Lock. The rear axles that I've located don't specify whether they have these features. But since they are both from LTDs, I can assume they have ABS, which was standard on LTDs. Do you know if the R/D Lock was too? And if not, am I OK to use a rear axle assembly without R/D Lock, since it was never really important to me?

Pretty sure the diff lock was only an option for the earlier models so could prove difficult to find however, someone on here has had success with an aftermarket one (other than ARB) or just pull it apart and inspect for damage.
