Wife was using 4x4 on 2000 Montero sport and was taking along time for 4x4 light to engage. While in 4x4 the ABS light came on and now will not go off. What is everyone’s opinions? Clutch solenoid valve or free wheel clutch switch?
Thanks
Brad

Yea it's more than likely the freewheel clutch solenoid under the airbox. Another possibility is the switches on the transfer case.

There are 3 switches on top of the transfer case that tell the electronic side of things whether it's in 2WD, 4HI, or 4LO. I would however check the solenoid first. You can test it with a multimeter and hand held vacuum pump.

These 3 switches affect ABS ligth? I ask because my Anti-Lock lights come on (and 4WD and rear diff lock flash).

Yea the three on top of the transfer case as well as the one on the front diff. However the failure of the freewheel clutch solenoid causes the front diff switch to hang open or closed depending on which solenoid fails. If all the switches aren’t on the same page it’ll disable the multi mode abs as the system doesn’t know what mode is engaged. In your case there is probably a separate setting when the diff is locked where it would join the two rear wheels as one.

Well, I did fix the R/D Lock light...found a broken wire at the left leaf spring. But 4wd light blinks and anti-lock comes on. Pretty sure the 4hi/low switch works in mine because the 4low fuel cut works. So if the front freelwheel clutch hangs, what are the symptoms? Other than the 4wd light flashing?

Typically it just causes chaos with the electronics where the light flashes and the abs disengages. Depending on which of the two solenoids fails on the freewheel clutch solenoid the front axle is stuck engaged or disengaged. My 4HI switch and freewheel solenoid failed not to long ago. It would mechanically engage in 2wd, 4Hi and 4Lo but the light still flashed and the abs light would stay on. If the solenoid clutch fails when it’s disengaged it won’t engage either 4Hi or 4Lo because it’s not able to engage the front axle.
Downside of it failing when engaged is it’s terrible for gas mileage as it causes a lot of drag having the front diff engaged when not in 4 wheel drive.
