I just noticed that when in "drive", the "D" on the dash cluster does not light up. All the other letters do, "P", "R", "N", etc... Except the "D".
Are there individual bulbs back there? Are they hard to get to to change? Is it worth taking apart the dash to change a bulb that is probably the size of a pinto bean?!
Thanks

There are individual bulbs back there behind the instrument cluster for each of the PRND2L segments of the dash. It's not difficult at all to access them. - Remove the 2 screws holding the instument cluster in position
- Remove one of the "dummy plugs" on the lower area of the instrument cluster (mainly used as a place to grasp when pulling the panel off
- once the 2 screws are off the whole unit pulls off
- Use a plastic wedge on the right side of the dash around the heater controls to gently pop cluster off
- Disconnect each switch so that you can fully romove the panel off of the dash
- Try and remove the panel from the dash evenly not allowing it to bend too much
- Once the panel is off, the meter/gauge unit can be accessed and removed by removing the screws that secure it to the dash
- Once the meter/gauge unit is out, you can remove the bulb for replacement

Thanks Joel! You are Da Man!
I just followed your instructions (apprehensively), bought a little bulb from Pep Boys, and BAM, my "D" is all lit up again.
What I know about fixing cars you can just about fit in a thimble. This site has been a savior. I got my MS new back in 98 and drove it around bone stock for 5+ yrs, and then I stumbled onto this site (and skidplates) looking for bigger tires. All my upgrades and mods have been found on this site w/your vehicle setting the example. Next thing I know I have the Sport of the Month. What I know about cars STILL fits in a thimble, but I think my ride is a little cooler, and I thank you and Jay and the rest of the guys who frequent this site.

BTW, perhaps I should have mentioned this earlier, but if you want to replace the bulb with something that should last MUCH longer than an ordinary bulb- you can try replacing your instrument panel bulbs with a replacement LED. You can find them here at autolumination.com/leds.html . I replaced my tailgate mounted 3rd brakelamps (921's) with 3 red LED bulbs and it looks pretty kick ***. The 3rd brake lamp bulbs blow out WAAAAY often in the Montero, Montero Sport, and just about every Mitsu vehicle that uses the 921's and the LED's haven't failed since I put them in a year ago. I even took out the red lens so that you can see each individual LED when the brakes are applied.... nothing like it! The LED's I have have 4 individual LED in each bulb.... the ones here have 9!! The look of 27 LED's at night should be awesome (note that if you leave the red lens on, you won't be able to see each individual LED- if you plan on taking the lens off of the truck, then you'll have to order the RED LED bulbs). I just installed 3- LED bulbs in the 3rd brakelight on the tailgate. I had 3 LED bulbs already, but each bulb only had 4 red LED each. The ones on the site in my earlier post has 9 for each bulb. Looks pretty kick a$$ and I'll never have to worry about blowing those bulbs. They seem to go out more often that any other bulb in any model Mits that I've seen. I'll take a picture and post it.... As far as the other bulbs- go to the site and follow the link that has a bulb guide for each vehicle model.

Joel, how is the output of the 921 LEDs compared to the stock incandescents? Are they as bright?
On application guide on that site it doesn't say which style bulbs the instrument cluster on the Montero Sport uses. Is it safe to say that the #74 bulbs fit? They are the smallest and they are described as "instrument panel and gauge bulbs." So these 74s are for gauges of all cars?

Guys, just remember that LEDs have a focused beam of light unlike incandescent lamp which is diffused.
I changed my break lights (1157s) to LEDs before and for me it looked ugly since instead of lighting the whole lens, I got a dot which is the same size as the bulb. Maybe it depends on your application.
To be fair, I just installed LEDs on my dome lights and courtesy lights ( door lights) and it is great. Although it's not brighter as the regular bulb, it looks good. There's a touch of blueis white light. I got it from autolumination (from Joel's reply on top).
cheers!

Hey Joel I took your advice once again and replaced my 921 3rd brake light w/ 3 red LED bulbs and took out the red lens. I like the look of 3 focused beams (w/9 bulbs ea). I always felt the brake lights in my bumper were kind of huge, not sure if it is specific to my vehicle year ('98), or a different bumper used for the rear gate tire carrier (see gallery photos). People behind me used to tell me that there was a whole lotta RED going on when i braked w/ the regular brake lights, the huge ones in the bumper, and the equally huge one in the tailgate window. Now, The 3 LEDS in the window w/ the smaller focused beam I think look kinda cool and compliment the 4 other huge brake lights.

I'll take a picture of the 3rd brake bulbs tonight and post them.... I just bought a 16" LED strip with 60LED's that I'm gonna use as my 3rd brake light... I'll install it and post pictures once I recieve it from UPS.
