When I shift my 99 MS into 4 wheel drive, i noticed the light does not come on. What could be causing this?
I think the car is in 4-wheel drive, but no indicator light.

sometimes the switch just needs to be "warmed up" to get it working again. try putting your sport in neutral and shifting in and out of 4wd repeatedly until the light starts working. it will take several tries before it works. i had to do this to my 99 sport as winter began setting in.

This will work better after a long drive once the gear lube has had a chance to warm up a bit. It also works best with the vehicle rolling in a straight line. This is a usual problem as the 4wd sits inactive in the warmer months, the switches will get stuck in position causing problems upon 1st winter usage. Good Luck!

I have got a new diesel 4wd Shogun Sport Once a week a slot the drive in to 4wd then to 4wd low back 4wd then back normal 2wd over a distance of 1 mile.
I have been doing to stop the drive switch seizing and to make sure all works as it should.
I have been told that doing this on a normal tarmac road could cause drive windup and damage the transmission.
Can it?

I've driven it till it got warm and still no indicator light. I did notice something.
When you first turn the ingnition and all the lights come on and go off, is the 4WD light supposed to come on initially then go off?
If it's supposed to come on like all the other lights when the car is started, then it's not. I see no light come on upon initial start up. What should I do?

It should come on, then off at start-up. It sounds like you just have a bad bulb.

Once a month I usually switch into 4WD (H & L) per someones instruction here. I have had no problems but today when I went to put it into 4H the light would not come on. I tried it a few times with no luck. When I got to work which is only 2 miles away I stopped the sport in the parking lot and put it into 4L and the 4L light comes on. When I did switch it into 4L I saw the 4H light come on for a moment so I don't think my problem is with the light. Is there a switch for both 4H & 4L? Any help would be helpful. Thanks again.

puddy, putting your truck into 4wd on dry pavement is a bad idea only if you turn. if you go straight it should be okay.

Joel. I have a question concerning this also, my light flikers when i put it in 4WD, and my ANTI LOCK BRAKE light comes on?? Driving me nuts! any suggestions?
Also is the transfer case a manual activation? Even though the light isn't on will the 4wd be engaged?? It isn't vacuum operated is it??
Thanks, Riperoo

The front axles are engaged by a spring loaded diaphragm that is spring loaded to LOCK the axles together. Engine vacuum would otherwise hold the axles unlocked. The transfer case is manually engaged, but if a switch in the transfer case is bad- then the front axles would never lock resulting in a 2wd driveline. Even though power is going to the front center propeller shaft, it is being unused due to the unlocked position of the front axles. It really depends on which switch fails as far as whether you have 4wd or not with the light flashing. Read the FAQ for info on the ABS light due to 4wd malfunction.

riperoo, my MS did the same thing. The abs light only came on when I initially put it in 4WD. After shifting in and out of 4WD repeatedly(appx. 20 times) like mentioned in an earlier post, the 4WD indicator light no longer flashes and the abs light stays out.

Thanks Guys, I spent my lengthy stop light filled commute yestereday, running thorugh the transfer case at every stop light, I was almost home and it was still acting up, at the very last light, it seemed to take, I took it to the woods for a little test run right before going home and it worked flawlessly. Thanks to all, i would not have perservered as long as it took with out this board, I was resolved to taking it to the dealer next time I had an extra grand in my pocket (That is about what it seems to cost me everytime i set foot in there.) It seems to be working fine now.
