Have 67k on 2000 MSLTD, dealer says I'm ready for timing belt replacement....He quoted $660 for drive belts and timing belt. Seem pricey, or about right? Thanks for the help.

yeah 660 sounds real good. But that doesn't sound like the labor was added in. I had mine replaced at 60,000, they kept it for about 4 days. They needed to order a few parts. Had a few animals leaving in the engine compartment, eating the wires, brake hoes, battery tie downs and oil cap. 3 times in 2 years. I'm on a roll.

This answer came from about.com: The timing belt, P/N MD307487 is $77.87 from the dealer. The labor is 3.5 hours.
I would recommend replacing the water pump, P/N MD978741 $127.78 from the dealer, at the same time. It only adds about .5 hours labor.
So we are looking at about $210.00 in parts and at $65.00 an hour labor (this varies from shop to shop), $260.00. Add a couple of gallons of anti-freeze and you're looking at about $500.00 plus tax and applicable fees. Now the parts are dealer prices, auto parts stores will sell the parts at a lessor price. I have gotten 3 quotes over the past week ranging from $450 to $600, so I would say this is right on. The $450 quote didn't include pulleys. He said these would only be replaced after a visual inspection. So, $660 seems extremely excessive to me, especially if that doesn't include a water pump. My recommendation is to go somewhere besides the dealer.

well if it is a model w/air then it is a 15 hour job. dont know what the 4hrs labor is based on but i know to get to the cam gears on my truck u have to tear down the front of the engine so that is $975 in just labor at 65an hour. Clay

$65 and hour is way cheap. Independant shops around here are at least $85 per hour. However, it is not a 15 hour job. I did mine in 6 hours, and I am not that fast.

because I use to work in the motor trade I always provided most parts myself its a lot cheaper and just got the dealer to do the work (labor +small parts washer etc)
Can you do this in the USA?

I have like 45K miles on my 3.5 XS and they told me I need to get it replaced. I don't know how much he said but I don't think it was that much. I didn't want to do it so I came home and told my neighbor and he said they're thieves because it's fine and it's supposed to be replaced at 100K miles.
This was at the dealership, by the way.

Having worked at a Mitsu dealer, i can guarantee you that they do NOT pay 15 hours to do a MS timing belt job- therefore, you should NOT pay 15 hours of labor to have it done. A timing belt "ala carte" is roughly a 4.5 hour job (multiplied by the shops hourly rate). Adding a water pump should add another .5- 1.0 hrs of labor and roughly $100+/- in parts . Cam/Crank seals (3 total) an additional 1.0 hrs labor. The hydraulic tensioner and tensioner/idler pulleys should not add any additional labor but will add a substantial amount to the parts cost. Lastly, adding accessory drive belts should NOT add to the labor cost as well. At most, you should expect to pay between 6.0- 6.5 hours of labor for a "deluxe" timing belt job. If any shop charges you more- have them show you the Haynes/Chilton labor book to justify the charges. By law- every repair facilty must abide to either one of these labor guides. If you're looking for the least expense- shop around and compare DEALER hourly rates or for packaged deals.
Having AC (which is standard on ALL US model V6 Sports) or having a 4WD does NOT affect the labor costs on the Montero Sport.
