I have a 97 MS XLS that drops idle and stalls 1 minute after starting. The truck has sat in the garage for the past six months but ran great prior to sitting. It now starts great when cold and throttle response is good. After 1 minute, the idle drops to a stumbling 200-300 RPM and eventually stalls. At this 1 minute point, the engine stalls if the gas is pressed. I'm guessing it's the throttle control or auto choke thinga-ma-jig. I used fuel stabilizer before leaving the truck sitting for 6 months and let it run so I'm hoping I saved the gas and seals. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. I live in Atlanta, GA if anybody services Monteros in this area.

Thanks for the reply. I too had left for a dployment (Army) and luckily it was only for 6 months. I had filled the tank with premium and added fuel stabilizer prior to leaving so I'm sure the gas is good. Also, draining the tank at this point would be very difficult and since it stalls after 1 minute, driving it around is not an option. I may just try starting and restarting it all day tomorrow and hopefully the problem works itself out. Any chance the throttlebody could be gummed up?
Thanks!

Did you disconnect your battery before storage or did you jumpstart your engine due to a dead battery upon restarting after storage? If so, read the FAQ.

Joel, Your FAQ section fixed my problem. Thanks so much!!! I had an IAC problem 2 years ago and it caused the truck to stall at stop signs but this time, the symptoms were different but the solution was the same. I cleaned inside the throttle body and I also removed the IAC and sprayed cleaner into the side ports in the throttle body and let the gunk flow out. Here's another problem that surfaced after sitting for six months. The auto trany barely moves the truck in Drive from a dead stop but works great in Low 1 & 2. After I get the truck moving from using 1 or 2, I can shift to D and it runs fine unless I come to another stop. Fluid change maybe??? I'm going to repost this so others can read. Thanks again!!!
