I been having something close to that. I will be standing with it in park and sometimes the 4x4 light will light up on and off like it is trying to engage (I haven't moved the shifter) and then Ill turn it off and on and it will go away. Also One time I when for gas and I drove it RWD mode and when I turned it on it was in 4x4 mode, so I shifted it a few times from 4h to RWD and it stopped and stayed in RWD. Is that the switch or should I look further into it since its now and again? Mind you It only happened once and Ive had my MS two weeks now..

My 2000 LS just started doing this also. Could one of the more experienced techs do up a DIY with lots of pics? The vehicle runs and drives fine but the flashing light is super distracting and I sure would like it to stop.
Thanks to all!

Freewheel clutch solenoid is bad. Around 85-90 to replace fix. Took me about 20 minutes a while back. It took care of the flashing 4 wheel light and the abs light!!

This is your culprit. Its located underneath the air filter box and is labeled with blue, yellow and red marked hoses. Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards Attachments:

Thanks for the pointers. I really appreciate it. I have searched for part number and found MR953809.
Part found on Ebay. Mitsubishi OEM brand new $48. Free ship. NICE! On it's way here.

Are you sure you have the right part? BD's listing indicates part # MR263723.

Yea the solenoid (part bd mentions) is the more than likely culprit. The part burlyls mentions is the actually clutch switch.

I had the same thing happen about 5 months ago and sure as heck it was the free wheel solenoid clutch, just like BD Montero mention to me in a post, I went out to my local mitsu dealer and got one. Just label your hoses before taking it off. My truck was grinding, making a loud grinding noise and 4 wh light and anti brk light flashing.

My turn to chime in here. I got a call from my daughter on Monday morning, saying the 4WD light was flashing. Without even looking at it, I ordered the part that BD shows above, from the same ebay vendor. It arrived on Wednesday, and we installed it Thursday morning. Walla, no more flashing 4WD light. 85 bucks. It took about 20 minutes, and that included time to show my daughter how to replace it. Just needed a 10 mm socket wrench to remove two bolts. We also used a flathead screwdriver to push the vacuum hoses off the old solenoid body, and we used a pair of pliers to compress and push a little white hose clip off. The only other part I had to remove was the air filter cover and intake duct, all as one piece. This gave easy access to the solenoid. Hardest part is keeping track of all the hoses, so they don't get mixed up. Good to label them as youngblood says. The whole thing was just a little more complicated than changing the oil.

Same for us.... had the shop deal with it as the Sport was in for a slew of issues (tranny puking fluid up the dipstick tube)... my daughter had let her x take it "mudding" on bald tires and got it stuck in mud up to the bottom of the doors... the mud finished off the solenoids and blocked the tranny breather tube...
Once the solenoids were swapped out we were good as new

So... Can anyone confirm if the vehicles with AWD use the free wheel clutch valve. I'm assuming they don't since they technically are never freewheeling in 2wd. Some places list them as parts for all years 97-05.
Reason I ask I was looking for the diagram of the hoses and whatnot. Shop manual I have is for an 03 so if they don't use it that won't be much help. Mine is doing it again for the second time in less than 100k. Noticed one of the hoses had a hole in it, cut it off, still doing it. Suppose I could take one hose off at a time and replace with the windshield washer hose I have. Used it on the vacuum lines with great success. Thinking one of the other hoses is dry rotted.
