As with probably 99 % of used cars my 2001 Monty came with no owners manual. Anyone have a link to a PDF of one? Only question at moment is what oil is recommended (3.0 engine) and what it the capacity with a filter change. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if there is a suggested one, but I use only Mobil 1 Synthetic. Not sure how many quarts yours takes though.

Speaking of oil weights. I'm thinking about going to a heavier weight to slow some leakage in the valve seal.
Reading in the manual of weight ranges it listed 20W-30. Has any of you tried this weight or similar, and what was the after effects .. Loss of milage ?

mine says 5w-30 on cap and manual. but *20*w-30? really? that can't be right, that would be like running molasses through your engine when cold! maybe a 10w-40 or something, but only if your engine has a lot of miles, some of the oil might not lubricate parts if its too thick. I ran 10w-30 in the summer, seemed to be a good weight.
*On a side note, mobil 1 synthetic isn't fully synthetic anymore (according to rumors) its been more like a blend than anything. => which isn't neccesarily bad, just a waste of your money!

I would avoid the heavier weight oils in these engines because the oil return passages are engineered for the thinner oils (the infamous Toyota sludging problems were the result of poorly engineered oil returns from what I have read). My 2001 3.0 calls for 5w-30 as preferred, or 10w-30 in climates that go over 100 degrees. I use Penzoil full synthetic in mine....153k miles. mvh

see the oil 101 post in the performance section. Heavier weights are not the way to go. Clay

Whenever you start a thread about oil, you get many different replies and opinions. Here's mine: I use what is specified in the official Mitsubishi Workshop Manual: For a temperature range -13 to +104 Fahrenheit (-25 to +40 Celsius) that would be 10W-30, so that is what I use. Never had any problems, summer or winter.

what about straight 30 weight? the 10w and 5w versions are for added wear protection in colder climates at startup. if u dont live in a cold climate then you wouldnt need -10 degree protection.

doesn't matter; oil gets super gel-like -- (i.e. how it comes out of the bottle) -- at 75 degrees farenheit or below.

As with anything from the manufacturer those are general guidelines for saftey or emissions. there is often times a better option for those willing to do some looking, research, modding.

When my 95 3.0 started burning oil (bad valve seals) the crew at 4x4wire.com suggested the Rotella 15-40. I used it for 2 or 3 changes before I got the seals replaced. I took posession of that truck at 75k and drove it to 206k w/no other engine issues.
