Seems I read somewhere that if you have two keys you can program a third. Otherwise you need a MUT scan tool or a locksmith.
Edit: That link that Larry shared is similar to what I was talking about. There is another thread that talks about it somewhere possibly another site/forum.

Duct tape your key to the inside of your steering column, and just use the non transponder blanks?

Duct tape your key to the inside of your steering column, and just use the non transponder blanks? Lol I like this. However would you happen to know if our sports really use a transponder or if they use resistance verification?

I've had my steering column cover off while turning my interior black and can say there is a tight winding of fine copper wire around the key hole, I didn't take it apart in fear of messing it up, and never starting it again lol. So I'd assume it is just the transceiver in the top of the key. I so wanted to put an LED replacement for the ignition key area but wimped out.

I have 2010 Montero Sport in Philippines with only one key received from owner when purchased last month. He gave me two keys that he said only needed programmed. I figured that they may need to have transponder chip so ordered two from online with blank keys and inserted the transponders into the keys the owner had given to me. Went to one dealer today to have programmed so vehicle can be started using these keys and was told the keys were not compatible that since this car was in the Philippines it had to use a key from the manufacturer at a cost of 4,200 peso (about $80 US) and they would not cut the key then charge me 1,800 peso to do the programming. Told them that with the terrible key cutting services in the Philippines no one would guarantee their work so if after spending the money to buy then cut and it wouldn't work I would have no recourse but to buy another key. Yes sir you are correct. Left the dealer and will now break the original key apart (previous owner had glued it back together) and place and glue transponder in a location near ignition. If anyone can back up what was told me by dealership it would be appreciated. Thanks
