So to make sure that my tranny flush and fill is done right. I have to go to the dealership due to the dealer only SPIII? I have a 2001 XLS and it is starting to slip once in a while. 156k miles, last fluid flush was done at about 100k but it was done at Carmax where I bought it.

OK, I still don't understand. I have a 1999 Montero Sport LS. Accrding with other guy, only the limited model came with the invec mitsu tranny which only uses the so called diamond III oil. Well according with another guy my monty has a "bulletproof Aisin Warner tranny which uses Dextron II oil. Here goes the questions, a- Do the diamond spIII is Dextron II compatible or should I use the Dextron II as recommended? b- Any synthetic oil you may recommend for that tranny? c- according with your experience which one of the above is the best for m y monty? Thanks. No one? It has a R4A51 tranny. Is this tranny is an aisin that specifies Dextron ATF?

The only thing I can comment on is that the techs have very strongly recommended NOT running synthetic in the automatics. Nothing I've experimented with nor had the urge. Not with an A/T. Too expensive if you make a mistake. And, I have the super secret Montero transmission in my '03 which takes it's own special fluid, so .... No help on the rest of this. Sorry. Edward

Ok. I have the R4A51 tranny. Even it is difficult to find out who manufactured this tranny. Still not clear what fluid is recommended for this.
Many people say it is not recommended to substitute the SPIII with Dextron IV. Otherwise, there are many people saying that no matter if the tranny came with Dextron ATF, it can be replaced for SPIII.
Still don't understand.

Have you tried running this by the guys on 4x4 Wire? I think they probably have a lot more experience with A/Ts and which fluids than everyone here.

By the way, I went to a store called MOPAR and asked for the tranny oil and guess what ? The seller told me to use the Dextron IV ! They are supposed to know, I think.

Uh, I would strongly suggest not asking Chrysler people what transmission fluid you should use. It was a Chrysler dealership that horked up my '03 transmission because the didn't know that the '03 Limited AWD 3.5L uses a different transmission and torque converter than all the other Sports. There are things that the Mitsu techs are going to know that Chrysler, Hyundai and every other brand that uses some Mitsu transmissions and engines won't. FWIW, the techs told me that mine isn't the first transmission they've seen screwed up by a Chrysler dealership shop. If you want an answer to a Mitsubishi question, ask a Mitsubishi technician. Thanks you both, guys !! I'll stick with the SP III. Well I found out my 1999 has the original Mitsu tranny R4A51 that states SPIII. on it . It has a stamped metal label an a serial number as long as a bin number. Any ideas how to remove the tranny's rear seal which is surrounded by a cylindrical metal cover which is used to protect the prop yoke that goes inside the tranny.

My vehicle is a 2002 Montero Sport XLS A.W.D. 3.5 Liter V6
I've read that this year model is very particular as to which fluid is used.
Can Hyundai Diamond SP III be used as an alternative to Mitsubishi's Diamond SP III for an transmission fluid exchange?
Local Hyundai/Mitsubishi dealer states that the fluids are identical. True or False?

My vehicle is a 2002 Montero Sport XLS A.W.D. 3.5 Liter V6 I've read that this year model is very particular as to which fluid is used. Can Hyundai Diamond SP III be used as an alternative to Mitsubishi's Diamond SP III for an transmission fluid exchange? Local Hyundai/Mitsubishi dealer states that the fluids are identical. True or False? No. According to the techs, '03 was the first year for the 5-speed A/T and that's the one with the special fluid issue. What I was told by both master techs was that in '03 Mitsu introduced the Montero 5-speed A/T in the 3.5L AWD Limited and ONLY in that vehicle. Also, according to the techs, the '02 3.5L Limited AWD uses the same 4-speed A/T as the rest of the Sports and uses the regular fluid. In fact, all the 4-speed A/Ts use the same fluid including the '97/98 AW4 that's found in Cherokees, Nissans, and Toyotas. The issue with the 'special' fluid on the '03 is the torque converter clutches, not the transmission, BTW. It only takes a few hundred miles to screw up the clutches and then the torque converter needs to be replaced. That replacement is about $3500-4000. NOW, this is what I was told by both master techs who have about 20 years worth of Mitsu experience apiece. What I KNOW is that information on this is virtually non-existent. I've never found documentation that even hints at the 5-speed A/T in a Sport. Its not even in my owners manual. I trust that my techs would know that the 5-speed wasn't in the '02, but if I were you I'd find a old master tech that's been working on these for 15-20 years and MAKE SURE. That is a God awful expensive replacement and there is NO fix other than replacing the TC. I have no idea on the substitution. I'm real skitish when it comes to running different A/T fluid than Mitsu recommends. Too many issues with people changing and having problems. Doesn't seem to make sense to me to save $10-15 dollars. And, I've been told things are 'identical' tooooo many times and found out they're not. Edward

Thanks for you reply ES_97Sport.
My 2002 Montero does have the 4 speed AT. Current mileage: 168,000
Most posts say it's pretty much a "bulletproof" transmission.
In my first post I didn't declare that the vehicle did have torque converter "shudder", at between 1,600-2,000 R.P.M. in Drive and 3rd gear. I read posts and decided that, first, a full fluid exchange was in order.
Could it possibly be a worn out solenoid or valve? Obviously replacing the torque converter would be the last resort.
So with regard to the correct ATF, knowing that it's a four speed, which fluid should be used, SP II or SP III? Also, when I return to the dealer, I will request Mitsubishi fluid only.
Thanks again, Edward
