I have a rattle in the hatch back door.(2001 Montero sport) It is not the license plate. What to tighten up? Do I have to take an access panel on the door off? How is the trim removed for access? My experience has been with old mustangs etc and one just inserts a screwdriver, twist and the trim or panel pops off. I want to minimize the damage I do trying to find the rattle since its inside the door. The door also appears to not fit snug which has additional rattles/noise to accompany the other mentioned rattles.
help appreciated.

Keeping this issue alive...until I find someone that has had rattles in the cargo door they have fixed. Im concerned about removal of door panel or whatever I have to remove as I dont want to "snap/break something accessing the door innards that rattle.
Q-1-Anyone know how to remove for access . Q-2-What commonly rattles in the door and any helpful hints?

Here is a pic of the trim panel its held on by a bunch of clips. just pull the piller trims off first then the lower panel. Uploaded with ImageShack.usOnce you have the panel removed have someone drive around while your in the rear listening to the rattle make sure your in a safe area with no one around.

Its the adjustable stops . One on the rt and left. I couldnt adjust them out so i glued a piece of 1 inch foam on both. worked
Update 6/16,re calked (black RV or windshield type) w/new added cushions. will work for a few more months. rinse and repeat

I have the same rattle. Nothing is loose in the tailgate. What are these adjustable stops you are talking about?

I figured them out and twisted them out 3 turns, they were all the way in so i'll see in the morning whether that fixed the rattling. Thanks very much, it was driving my girlfriend up the wall.

Ok Ijust noticed this post was forgotten byme once I solved the issue. Heres what happened:My rough dirt driveway(have to drive 5-10 mph, otherwise the road is way too rough) caused my back door to fracture the metal around those adjustable rubber bumper stop inserted in the door. The foam fix quit working so I placed a towel or large piece of rug along the rubber moulding and shut the door on it,making sure it didnt hangout theback.LaterI took surgical tubing and inserted it into a slit I made in the door moulding its full length from the left side to the right side of the back opening, that worked too. The dealer wanted a coupe hundred dollars to replace the rubber door molding to solve the rattle. The door cracks can be welded, but youll have a real mess. A repaint and change in metal temper resulting in additional cracks again and several dollars for a non permanent fix. Replace the whole door would solve the problem too. On the MS Ive never had a nut vibrate loose,or anything broken from my rough driveway. Ive had long lived batteries too, inspite of the road . 3 in 15 years and 230K mi. With that I have to conclude the door system is just too flimsy when it gets trashed and the nothing else does including the 12volt batteries .

On this rattle you can take black electrical tape and wrap it around the latch catch a few times . mine is silent and i live on bumpy dirt roads . It wears down after time and you will feel a divet on the latch .
