Hey guys! I'm new to Montero Sports, I just bought mine two days ago. However I am not new to Mitsubishi. I also have a 1991 Eclipse GST that I have owned for over 10 years and a 2005 Evolution VIII I have owned for a little over a year.
A little about my Monty and why I got it. I was in need of a tow vehicle for my Eclipse which is now a track only car. I had a budget of $2800. I had been looking for a while and I found this Diamond in the Rough. It's a 2000 Montero Sport XLS 3.0 4x4. It ran but needed a lot of TLC. To give you an idea: belts squeal, shuts off at stops, AT Temp light came one when I got to my house, one headlight and one brake light out, missing one of the cross member on the roof rack and all the end pieces, both rear reflectors broken, stains all over the carpet, cracked taillight, radio didn't work, compartment below radio broken, missing two center caps, 1 tire is a different brand, etc.
Now here's the deal. I have a race in 9 days that is 5 hours away and I have to tow my car there. I don't want to get stranded so I need to get this truck running like a top. I also can't stand a dirty car so I've been putting lots of work into cleaning it up. The same day I bought the truck placed a rather large order from Rock Auto to do an extensive tune up! Some of what I will be doing: full timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets, transmission flush (using only Mitsubishi SPIII), transmission filter, air filter, fuel filter, idle air control valve, cleaning the throttle body, new headlight bulbs, all new wipers, all three belts, etc. My shipment will all be arriving over the next two days.
In the meantime while I wait for parts to come in I decided to visit the local You-Pull-It and got pretty lucky! I got the missing roof rack cross bar along with 4 more tie down loops and the end pieces, a new brake light housing, both missing center caps, several broken trim pieces for the inside, 1 new reflector, all new leather door panels, armrest lid, and lighted sunvisers off a limited, extra dividers for the cargo trays in the back, etc. Plus I did a deep cleaning of the inside along with shampooing the carpet. All the stained came out and it now looks brand new inside! Also this morning I installed the Alpine head unit and trunk mounted 6 disk CD changer that used to be in my Eclipse. Gotta have some tunes while towing!!
As of this afternoon I pulled it in the garage to begin the tear down. I want to get everything apart so when the new part arrive I can just throw them on and be ready to go for next weekend!! I will try to keep this updated with my progress and I'm site I'll have some questioned along the way. I'll upload some pictures tomorrow, I'm on my phone and am unable to upload them at the moment.
P.s. I forgot to mention, it doesn't have a tow hitch. I was hoping to find one at the junkyard but no luck. I'll be ordering one in the morning.
