Anyone know what I can use to replace the washer/gasket on the gas tank drain plug. Had small leak and removed the drain plug and the washer/gasket was basically falling apart. Nearest dealer is 70 miles away. I still would like to remove the drain plug when I am done so no JB weld. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Is it similar to the crush gasket used on some oil drain plugs?

The washer appeared to be a fiber washer but there was so little left it was hard to tell. I am thinking about a copper washer from a plumbing store but am worried about how hard to tighten since the bolt is made of brass and I don't want to strip it.

Anyone ever find an answer to this? Yes it is an old thread. I have a 2002 Montero Sport XLS and will be draining the tank and pulling it soon. Would like to have a new gasket on hand prior. The on-line parts books only get me to the tank assembly level, not the sub part gasket. I did find a fibrous gasket for a Mitsubishi Stealth but not the part number for same. No clue if this would fit mine and clearly the plug is not brass as was posted in this thread. Is the plug really brass? www.ninjaperformance.com/mitsubishi-oem-3000gt-stealth-fuel-tank-drain-plug-gasket-p-220125.html

I pulled my tank a few months ago, but ran it low of fuel first instead of removing the drain plug so didn't get a chance to look at that specific gasket. I usually just keep gasket material around and cut my own if necessary.

Actually I dropped the tank yesterday on my 2002 3.5L Montero Sport and used the drain plug. It is a 12mm bolt.
The bolt has what appears to be an aluminum washer attached to it, no fiber material evident. Sorry no picture.

Take the bolt to Oreilly's, they can use a set of dial calipers to get an exact match for the washer if you need another one (probably an M12 washer). I would personally use a copper crush washer if the tank is made of steel. Another option is to buy a sheet of gasket material and make you're own, I can't speak for other parts stores but I know Oreilly's usually has some in stock for like $13~$15. Backup plan could be to use some sort of fuel resistant rtv, make a small bead in a circle right around the drain plug hole, let it sit for 10mins or until it's tacky, then finger tighten and leave for 30mins, lastly tighten to torque spec.

Those are good thoughts.
I put it back as I found it however. Crossing fingers.
