2 weeks ago the altenator on my wifes 00 sport went out, so i replaced it with a orielys reman and its ran great. well..last night she was just able to coast in to town.it seems this one has stopped charging as well and the battery is 5 weeks old. i was told by a few people that this was a common problem and using a genuine o.e.m part was the only way to fix it..something to do with the windings and internal voltage regulator. this really has me upset because its a beast to remove( as you all know)has anyone else had a similar problem or is the o.e.m line bogus? id hate to pay 300 bucks for a altenator when a reman is 130!

it should still be under warranty and have it replaced.....same thing happened to my Monty, had my trusty shop replaced it almost 2 years ago....think it came from either Pep Boys or Oreilly's....after a few weeks it was replaced, batt light is ON again and not charging....brought truck back to the shop and they replaced it for free since it is under warranty......been almost 2 years now and no problem so far....

You most likely have an oil leak from the front cam seal. The oil will seep down through the alt and collect on the bottom if you wipe the bottom of the alt I bet its oily. fix the leak then replace the alt.

Surprisingly, my alternator lasted quite a long time with the rear cam seal leak. Unsure how I got so lucky but it made it through almost 2 years of daily driving overseas....Just didn't have the ability to work on the car as much as I wanted to during that time. I did the seal in the parking lot but alternator needed replaced not long after

hi folks, my 99 is having the same issues. i have the new alt in hand ready to install and now i realize i have to fix the leak...cam seal. i have the 3.0 and it is on the passenger side. do i have to take off all the pullies and what nots to get to the cam seal. from what i have seen on the internet everyone makes it sound like i just stick a 12mm socket on there and remove 2 bolts and pull it out. it does not look like that's the case when i look into this area. can anyone assist me on this? thanks.

It is most likely the FRONT passenger side cam seal. If that is the case, it is a LONG and treacherous path. Kind of like lord of the rings, just without the Hobbits. Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards

You basically have to do a timing belt job to access the front cam seals. It's not too difficult if you have some experience with a wrench, just time consuming. However, it does solve the problem of the oil drip on the alternator. Watch the timing belt video around here (you tube) and you can see the access to the seal much better.

ok, i got everything back togather and when i started it it sounded very rough. it was kind of hard idleing and almost shuting off. the sound was not a squeek or a squeal. it sounded like the idle was going up and down and the bottem big pully was very wobblely.and almost sounded loose. but i never touched that pully other than to put the belts around it. is it a water pump problem? or belt too tight?? thanks again.

Just wanted to say, I've been thru 6 alternators in 2 yrs. I have a 2000 MS, with original lasting 12 yrs. The after market alternators are not compatible with the MS. I learned the hard way. The longest lasted 9 months, shortest 3 weeks, & on average, 6 months for the rest. It was always under warranty, so It was replaced at no charge, but still the aggravation. My shop did tests & even changed vendors, getting different alternators to see if that would work. Finally I had enough & went to a Mitsubishi dealer. I now have a Genuine Mitsubishi alternator. I'm worry free. I never had oil leaking on my alternator. Other alternators will fail, if not a O.E.M.
