Hello everyone,
I just purchased on Monday a 03 Montero Sport ES. its a 3.0 v6 2WD. (traded even my 05 Mazda 3 for it actually) ill get you pics later since I am thrilled about my first SUV and have lots of plans and questions.
the thing in matter is: the coded key is broken, right from the plastic, so to turn it on they guy gave me a non chipped duplicate that had to be held with the plastic chip in order for the truck to start. i have them together with electric tape to make it work.
i just found a pair of uncut programmable keys for $25 that state are compatible with my truck. Do i have to check if they really are or no? if i have to, please let me know how!
Thanks in advance!

Anyone?
my previous car had the same issue and the previous owner tied the plastic transponder to the ignition barrel. that way the car started with a regular key. do you think this could work at least? i don't mind if that's the cheap/easy way to fix it.

In case anyone has this issue in the future; i zip tied the transponder piece to the ignition barrel. now the truck starts fine with non transponder keys.

Same way that has been used for a long time of glue/tape a key hidden under dash for using remote starters with out a bypass relay.
