All this talk of modifying Monteros has me wishing I had more money. I have been browsing craigslist and there are so many Monteros for sale all waiting for someone to rescue them.

I swear every one here has rescued at LEAST one sport.. they're like abused animals. It's because they run it till it starts leaking a little bit of oil then toss it and get a different vehicle. Most people want a vehicle that requires next to no maintenance besides basic oil changes, brake changes, and otherwise smaller things. These Monteros require additional care but what most don't realize is they just don't die if upkept.

... Most people want a vehicle that requires next to no maintenance besides basic oil changes, brake changes, and otherwise smaller things. There's no such thing as a vehicle that doesn't require regular maintenance. I'm talking about the stuff in every vehicle owners manual. There's nothing special about Mitsus. You do the same stuff to them that you do to any other 4WD. No, they don't require additional care. They just require that you do the regular maintenance when you're supposed to. My '97 doesn't get 'additional care'. In fact it gets the crap beat out of it. I just do the maintenance in the owners manual when it says to do it. I'd have to agree with the last part. I can't believe my '99 would even move as bad a shape as it was in. Edward

Edward Then we could collectively buy all the Sports for sale in the county and make our own Pick-A-Part yard.

Edward I think you misunderstood what I meant, what I was referring to is that impulse people have to toss out something that requires a little repair in favor of something new. EX: My vehicle has an oil leak, It'd be easier for me to sell it and get something that doesn't have that issue and it will be something new or at least to me if I had some extra cash. Not referring to me specifically, I'd rather fix what I've got. Just from my personal observation about the average Joe/Jane over the years. I do agree with you on the matter that you should perform the maintenance when you're suppose to, however a lot of people either forget or don't really care it seems.

Officially put 11,000 Miles on my Sport since last August, I must say I am still very pleased. Everytime I see my sport when I walk outside I feel excited, it's just a blast to drive. My family was so skeptical when I bought it and thought it wouldn't last 500 Miles, heh showed them didn't we. I made two 850 mile trips within a six month span and I must say it's still going strong.

Going through the process of learning how to detail a car, so in the next few days I'll post some pictures of my sport polished and waxed. I practiced on the hood today and I never noticed that my sport has little flecks of green in it. Here's a close up with a few specks in it. (battling with some crazy water spots and old abused paint)

Cool...
detailing is all about patience. Rush it and you can ruin it quick. Careful on that clear coat. Dad burnt thru Mom's clear back in the day... YIPES!
I have to get brave and work on the Sport. I have failed clear on the fender. Seems it was repainted at some point and the repaint failed along the top edge of the fender. I'm debating about how best to handle it. I think I might buy a pint and repaint the new junkyard bumper cover myself and blow it onto the fender taping the upper body line and blending mid top edge... then doing a Dodge style strip to cover the blend. The rest of the fender looks great, just that one spot. I know I will end up with orange peel, so I prefer to limit it to only the bad spot versus messing up the whole fender...

Have you considered having it plastidipped? Something as small as a Fender shouldn't cost too much if there's a shop near you that can do it.

Plastidipped? Really?

plasti dip... not over a two inch tall 1 foot strip of peeling clear... not worth it... Honestly, I don't really care for the stuff.. it does not lay smooth enough on the cars I have seen. Plus they would never match the white... I would have to do the whole truck... The auto paint store has the compressed air canisters for those of us who don't have adequate compressors... mustang engine bay came out pretty good that I painted with automotive paint a few years back. before: ford did not clear and dusted their base coat... pitiful After: notice how much better everything matches the exterior fenders:

If done properly plastidip can last a long time and look good. Most people just try to cover up problems with plastidip and they create more problems hence the reputation. You still need to sand and prime for the perfect look, But nothing beats a good paint job for looks and longevity.
