This might be too late but about 2 months ago I got myself a 2003 Montero Sport XLS 3.5 194,000 miles for 900 bucks. I use to have a 03 ES 3.0 about 3 years ago that I loved but I had to sell it. But I wanted another one again so I picked this one up from Craigslist.
The seller owned his own shop and this was his customers vehicle. They brought it in for a no start issue as he told me. Well they found out it was the ICM. They replaced it and it fired up. It ran horrible and I was told it was the cats being clogged. It say for 3 months and I found it on Craigslist and got it fast. It was about an hour from home. So I used my grand Cherokee to tow it home. It kept consitly kept dying on me to get it up the trailer and it just ran horrifically!! Got it home and it was just running really poor. Got it in the garage and started tear down. Changed plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets and tube seals (surprisingly were not oil soaked), upper and lower intake gaskets, pcv, mass airflow sensor, Egr solinoid, timing belt, water pump (original) timing components and I'm sure there's more but first start up and still ran poorly, but way way better. Better to the fact that I could drive it around and it drove awesome just had a really rough idle. I did everything I could to figure out the idle, new IAC, cleaned injectors, looked for vacuum leaks, everything. I gave up after a month and took it to a shop and found out it was the ECU after all. but the cats were never clogged like the previous owner said. But I think I got a steal for 900 bucks. Drives really good! The trans shifts perfect and all
The interior was trashed like my old one go figure but I cleaned it out and it looks like new again. The exterior needs a major buff it's all chalky blahhhhh but I think I got a good steal just waiting to pick it up from the shop.
The day I picked it up
The nasty interior
